Paul Anka On Why His Romance With Annette Funicello Ended

Paul Anka and Annette Funicello shared a close and meaningful relationship that began in the late 1950s. The lovers were prominent figures in the entertainment industry during this era, with Anka rising to fame as a teen idol and pop singer and Funicello becoming a beloved star through her work as a Mouseketeer on Disney’s The Mickey Mouse Club.

Their relationship was so intense that Anka wrote the hit song “Puppy Love,” which tells the story of their youthful romance. Sadly,  their romantic involvement did not last, but the duo maintained a lifelong friendship until Funicello’s passing in April 2013. Recently, Anka reflected on his brief relationship with Funicello, highlighting the reason why it was short-lived.

While appearing on a two-part episode of On Our Way with Paula Anka and Skip Bronson, where he serves as co-host, the 82-year-old delved into his cherished memories of  Funicello. During an engaging conversation with his guest and long-time friend, Frankie Avalon, Anka talked about the dynamics of his relationship with the beloved actress.

He described Funicello as a “remarkably sweet and lovable person” while recalling her consistently kind and warm nature. He emphasized that the late actress’ good nature and positive spirit remained unwavering throughout their relationship.

Anka disclosed that his feelings for Fucinello were profound and unwavering throughout their entire time together, even though their relationship started during their teenage years. However, he admitted that despite the intensity of their love, it encountered a significant obstacle due to his reluctance to commit to it at that time.

The  82-year-old explained that while Fucinello desired marriage and a stable life together, he was gripped by fear and unable to embrace that level of commitment. This hesitation ultimately caused a rift in their relationship, and they drifted apart.
