There are some partnerships that feel completely natural and obvious on paper yet take astoundingly long to come to fruition. One collaboration is, at last, getting a chance to shine: that of comedian Damon Wayans and his son, fellow comedian Damon Wayans Jr.
63-year-old Wayans is a standup comedian known for a solid stint on Saturday Night Live. He also served as a writer and performer for Fox’s In Living Color. His son is equally successful, known for starring as as Brad Williams in the ABC sitcom Happy Endings. Now, the two will be working together for the CBS sitcom, Poppa’s House.
Damon Wayans is excited to “finally” work with his equally-talented son in a new sitcom
At the start of May, Wayans was all too excited to announce a project with his son Damon. “It’s almost time for the double Ds, ya’ll!” he teaased in an Instagram post. “‘Poppas House’ is OTW! This fall on #cbs.” The post is accompanied by a video showing the two comedians bounce off of one another.

This project has been a long time in the making—a decade, specifically.
“I’ve been trying to do this for about 10 years now,” revealed Wayans. “I’ve been trying to do this for about 10 years now. But [Wayans Jr.’s] people didn’t think I was ready yet. But it’s been in the making. We’ve been talking about it for a while and it just finally kind of came together.”
Playing to every strength a team made up of this father-son duo has to offer
Both Wayans and Damon have proved themselves capable of producing quality content independently. For his performance in Happy Endings, Jr. was nominated for the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series back in 2012. He’s also quite familiar with handling prominent roles, having also played Coach in the Fox sitcom New Girl, along with a starring role in the movie Let’s Be Cops, which greatly eclipsed its budget of $17 million thanks to $138.2 million at the box office.
Fans got a teaser of Wayans working with Damon thanks to the Showtime sketch comedy series The Underground, which featured Wayans in a starring role, as well as his son. The Underground was designed to be “In Living Color on steroids,” according to Wayans, who also proudly boasted, “We decided to test the limits.” The show’s description vowed, “The future of comedy is here in Damon Wayan’s hilarious and uninhibited comedy sketch show where no topic or taboo goes unturned.”
Wayans wants to bring a similar level of high energy to Poppa’s House. “There’s definitely gonna be a lot of fun,” he assured of the upcoming CBS show. “And my goal is to make him laugh and his goal is to make me laugh. And when we make each other laugh, then it’s infectious.”
Kevin Hench is tapped to serve as executive producer, and has already co-written the series polite with Wayans and Damon. Poppa’s House will air on CBS on Monday nights this autumn.
