“Susan you made Grease that much more special!” Travolta praised Buckner in an Instagram Story post. “We will miss you!” The sweet text is accompanied by side-by-side pictures of her in Grease and a photo of her from more recently.
The actress lived a life of quiet glamour
Before she was an actress dancing her way into the hearts of millions at Rydell High, Buckner enjoyed steady success in pageantry. The Seattle native won the title of Miss Washington in 1971. The following year, she represented the Evergreen State at the Miss America pageant, where she made it into the top 10 bracket. In fact, she even tied for first in the swimsuit preliminary.
Buckner’s graceful physicality served her well in Grease and again in The Brady Bunch Variety Hour, where she played one of The Krofftettes, performing synchronized swimming feats. She was also on The Dean Martin Show as one of The Golddiggers, the all-female singing and dancing group.
Buckner married Michael R. Josephs from 1979 to 1997, and they had two children together. Her daughter, Samantha Mansfield, remembered Buckner for “The light she brought into every room.”
