As Curb Your Enthusiasm wrapped up for the season’s end, Richard Lewis, who played himself in the series, died from a heart attack at 76. This came as a shock to his cast mates and fans of the show, however, he was able to make it for the last few episodes, which was an emotional watch for most.

Many Curb stars past and present showed up for the finale, including Larry David who was touched by Lewis’ words after filming. In the behind-the-scenes clip, which went viral on social media, the late actor thanked the crew for the “greatest experience” of his career, and for “being so sweet.”

Full of gratitude for a successful season, Lewis was seen rising out of his seat in the viral clip, after which he thanked Larry for having “treated me like a god and all of you have. I love each and every one of you. I’m honored to be working with arguably the greatest sitcom writer in the last two centuries. And God bless all of you.”

Fans reacted to Lewis’ emotional moment and shared their condolences on X, formerly Twitter. “A touching speech and likely the last public words uttered by Richard Lewis. If so, he went out w/ very touching words. Thanks for all the laughs over the years Richard Lewis. RIP,” someone wrote. “Literally made me cry. No one better,” another added.

Since joining the Curb Your Enthusiasm series in October 2000, Lewis became one of Larry’s longest partners in crime on the show, and both men found lasting friendships outside of filming as well. After the news of Lewis’ passing broke in February, Larry took to the internet with a heartfelt tribute, where he noted that they were born three days apart in the same hospital.

“For most of my life, he’s been like a brother to me. He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me sob and for that, I’ll never forgive him,” Larry’s statement reads. Fans attested to the co-stars’ relationship as well and they comforted Larry for his loss. “They are so good together,” someone noted. “They went to camp together as kids; they’ve known each other a long time. Larry must be gutted,” a fan said.
