In 1996, Happy Gilmore brought the laughs in a unique sports comedy starring Adam Sandler in the title role. The actor and comedian has since worked on dozens of projects, with radio silence surrounding the tale of a failed ice hockey player turned golfer – until now, with Drew Barrymore confirming through her show that Happy Gilmore 2 is in the works.
Sandler put together the screenplay for Happy Gilmore with his writing partner Tim Herlihy, making it their second feature collaboration together just a year after the first, 1995’s Billy Madison, also starring Sandler in the title role. The sequel is not only “in the process” of being created, it’s actually further along than some might have anticipated.
If anyone has been keeping tabs on a potential Happy Gilmore 2, it’s Barrymore, who is a proud fan of Sandler’s other works. “I want it. I need it. And I stayed up last night with my daughter watching Billy Madison,” Barrymore said in a preview clip of Friday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show.
“I sent Sandler a video of that, and then he sent me another video back, and I’m waiting to see if he’s confirming about the Happy Gilmore 2 script,” she went on.
Confirming he was. Later footage shows Barrymore looking at her phone and announcing, “This just in, I have breaking news,” she says. “I’ll just say this, from my source, that it is in process. There is a process, and that process is in process.”
Christopher McDonald, who played the fussy, arrogant star golfer Shooter McGavin in the original Happy Gilmore, was one of the first to broach the subject of a sequel with Cleveland radio’s Ken Carman Show. Sandler had just given him a big glimpse into the progress that had been made already, a story he shared with Barrymore.
“I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this,'” recounted McDonald. “I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that,’ and he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2. Maybe you should cut that out because I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So it’s in the works. Fans demand it, damn it!”
