Renowned for her unmistakable voice and comedic prowess, Fran Drescher made a lasting impression playing Bobbi Flekman in the iconic 1984 mockumentary film This Is Spinal Tap. Her character, Bobbi Flekman, is a resilient and no-nonsense publicist for the fictional rock band Spinal Tap. Drescher’s portrayal added a delightful comedic flair to the narrative, skillfully maneuvering through the outrageous intricacies of the music industry alongside the band members.
Although it’s been four decades since she starred in the movie, the entertainment world was abuzz with excitement recently following a report by Deadline that Drescher will be reprising her iconic role in a sequel to the 1984 movie Spinal Tap II. This announcement marks a thrilling reunion between Drescher and the beloved Bobbi Flekman character, promising fans a nostalgic journey infused with fresh comedic brilliance.
Following the announcement, the 66-year-old actress took to her Instagram profile to confirm the news. Alongside a screenshot of the Deadline article, she wrote, “Get Ready,” teasing her followers about the upcoming project.
While the iconic mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap has long awaited a sequel, the forthcoming film won’t be the first time Drescher has tapped into her role as Flekman. In a clever twist, she previously integrated the character into a fifth-season episode of her beloved ’90s sitcom The Nanny, where her character Fran Fine hilariously impersonated the publicist.
Filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner, in a 2022 interview with Deadline, revealed that the sequel took a long time because the production team wanted it to resonate with the original. “For so many years, we said, ‘Nah.’ It wasn’t until we came up with the right idea how to do this,” he admitted. “You don’t want to just do it to do it. You want to honor the first one and push it a little further with the story.”
Filming for the movie is presently taking place in New Orleans. In addition to Descher, Deadline also mentioned that Chad Smith, the drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Lars Ulrich, the drummer for Metallica, are anticipated to appear in cameo roles in the forthcoming film.
