“Trailers have always been kind of a favorite part for me, even as a boy going to the movies,” he shared with a grin. “You’re obviously there to see the movie you want, but isn’t it kind of cool when you see what’s coming? … And with that in mind, I did my very best to expose what’s going to be a four-part saga.”

For his own film, Costner has put total audience immersion as one of his biggest goals. “Can they, in a sense, feel themselves in this movie? Because that’s what I want people to feel in the dark, that [it] suddenly just absorbs them,” Costner explained. “We all know what happens when the lights go out — either something good, something average or something great. What I hope is that this is something that stays with them forever.”

During the Zoom panel, Costner reflected on the huge undertaking that Horizon: An American Saga proved to be and the lengths he had to go to see it done.

“I’m terribly satisfied in my own life that God allowed me to get these first two done,” said Costner. “I mean, if I’m hit by lightning, who knows what happens? At least I went West.”

He had to do quite a bit to get West, however, mortgaging his $50 million Santa Barbara home to secure funding for the project. “I’ve mortgaged 10 acres on the water in Santa Barbara where I was going to build my last house,” he shared. “But I did it without a thought. It has thrown my accountant into a f—ing conniption fit. But it’s my life, and I believe in the idea and the story.”

Fans can see this story unfold first on June 28 for the theatrical release of the first part of Horizon, and then on August 16 for the release of the second half of this saga. It is set during the American Civil War period and follows the expansion of the American West. While waiting for the theatrical releases, check out the teaser below!
