D-Day Veteran Honored On His 100th Birthday

The D-Day landing executed on June 6, 1944, along the shores of Normandy, France, stands as a remarkable achievement in World War II military history. The coordinated efforts of the Allied Expeditionary Force under the command of US President Dwight D Eisenhower contributed to its meticulous planning and execution, resulting in the defeat of Nazi Germany, thus bringing an end to the long war.

It’s been more than four decades since the historic invasion, and one of the high-ranking officers, Lieutenant Richard Willis RN, who was instrumental in the strategic execution of the D-Day landing, recently celebrated his 100th birthday. Click here to see the photos!

A touching surprise birthday celebration, orchestrated by the Somerset Lieutenancy, unfolded at the Nynehead Court Care Home where he now resides. The event drew the presence of esteemed military officials and Willis’s family, creating a poignant gathering to honor his outstanding service and enduring dedication.

Reacting to the kind gesture from family and friends, the 100-year-old, who was lost for words, explained that the events of the historical invasion remained etched in his memory. “I’m not sure what I’ve done to deserve this,” Willis admitted. “I was just there. But D-Day was an experience I will never forget.”

During the celebratory event, the Lieutenancy honored the veteran by arranging the presentation of a D-Day chart depicting the Utah beach landings. The chart, meticulously crafted by the UK Hydrographic Office and previously classified as Top Secret, was presented by Rear Admiral Peter Sparkes, the chief executive of the UK Hydrographic Office. “Presented to Lt Richard Willis on the occasion of his 100th birthday,” the inscription on the chart reads. “With the thanks and admiration of the Lord-Lieutenant and the people of Somerset.”

Ted Allen, the Vice-Lieutenant of Somerset, who was also present at the event, expressed gratitude to Lt Willis, acknowledging him for his commendable service in the war. “It’s an honor for me to be here today to celebrate the milestone birthday of a remarkable man,” he confessed. “The country owes all our veterans an enormous debt of gratitude, and it was a joy for me to be able to express that gratitude on behalf of His Majesty.”
