Helen Mirren took the opportunity to educate fans about the beauty of aging during an interview with British magazine Hello!. The 78-year-old actress urges people to “celebrate” aging rather than “fight it” as she shared her experience with the inevitable. “You die young, or you get old,” she reminded us. “…and I don’t want to die young.”
The actress seeks to enjoy life rather than worry about getting older and society’s expectations of her as an elderly celebrity. “I’m too interested in life. It’s wonderful, so celebrate that and enjoy it,” she added.
Growing up comes with changes, with some difficult to accept; however, Helen chooses to make the most of this transition. “You’re not supposed to have longer hair after a certain age. But during Covid, I started growing my hair and I hadn’t actually had long hair since I was in my 20s,” she said on Lorraine. “And it sort of grew and grew and grew, and I couldn’t be bothered to cut it, basically.”
She describes her choice to let her hair be “radical” and is choosing to stick with it for a little while. “I thought, do you know what, it’s pretty cool It will come off eventually. But I’m kind of enjoying it, it’s quite radical,” she gushed. The screen icon stands out for her silver locks and effortless style on red carpets, which fans adore and compliment every time.
As someone who is a role model to many women over 60, Helen inspires them to “be self-motivated” and never give up. “Life doesn’t stop,” she said. “And creativity doesn’t stop, and passion doesn’t stop, and energy doesn’t stop unless you decide to stop it.”
Helen advised her fans during an interview with Vogue that the system is rigged against women, so they shouldn’t try to please anyone. “There is, as should be very clear by now, simply no way to win as a woman. So don’t even bother trying to age gracefully,” she claimed. “‘It’s much better to age disgracefully!”
