Did John Travolta Actually Sing In ‘Grease?’

Forty-five years after the release of Grease in June 1978, fans remain curious to know if John Travolta actually sang in the movie. Although he did sing “Greased Lightnin,'” the part was originally meant for his co-star, Jeff Conaway, who played Kenickie. John stole the spotlight to perform the solo, to which he admitted, “I wanted the number and because I had clout, I could get the number.”

He also sang other tracks, including “Summer Nights,” “You’re the One That I Want,” “Sandy,” and “We Go Together.” John was already gaining fame as an actor thanks to the television series Welcome Back, Kotter and the movie Saturday Night Fever when he scored the role of Danny Zuko, which almost went to Happy Days’ Henry Winkler. While he was not a professional singer, his charisma and delivery helped make up for what he lacked as a vocalist.

Although there have been rumors about John simply lip-syncing to the music, the truth is that it really was his voice. In 2002, John and Olivia Newton-John, who played Sandy, even reunited to sing “You’re The One That I Want” and went on stage at the Paramount Lot in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

The Phenomenon actor also did a Grease routine in a T-Mobile Super Bowl commercial where Zach Braff and Donald Faison from Scrubs joined him as they sang new lyrics to the tune of “Summer Nights.” John also recreated some dance moves and signature poses from the ’70s classic. After Olivia died in 2022 from breast cancer, he paid tribute to her on Instagram with a sweet note that read, “Your impact was incredible. I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever!”

John also showed off his singing and performing abilities in Hairspray, where he played Edna Turnblad. His co-star, Nikki Blonsky, told People during the movie’s 15th anniversary that John sang some Grease numbers on set. “We were filming in Queen Latifah’s music shop, and all of a sudden, we were on a break and one of the dancers yells out, ‘John, give us a little Grease,” she recalled.

He obliged and “sat there on the couch and he did a little ‘Summer Loving'” while Nikki joined in for “You’re The One That I Want.” Other cast members, including Zac Efron, were delighted to hear him entertain them while filming, with Nikki terming the moment “one of the highlights of my life.”
