Chaz embarked on a profound physical and social journey, transitioning from a female identity to a male one. The change peaked in May 2010 after a California court granted him his formal request for a change in gender and name.
However, throughout his transformation journey, his mom, who has long been a vocal advocate and staunch supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, recently opened up about her feelings regarding her son’s transgender transition.
Cher says her son, Chaz Bono’s transgender transition was quite challenging for her
While speaking with the Los Angeles Times, the 77-year-old openly revealed that despite her familiarity with and acceptance of the LGBTQ community, her son’s decision to undergo a sexual alteration was challenging. “When Chaz went through the transition, that was difficult for me,” Cher told the news outlet. “It shouldn’t have been because, you know, I’ve had gay friends forever. I just met some beautiful trans chicks, and we have an affinity. Now I’m totally fine.”

“It’s hard to lose one child to get a new one, especially so late. I think that was the hard thing for me,” she continued. “I don’t think it was the transition. It was waiting to see who the person would be and would they be so much different than the person that was before them.”
Cher previously acknowledged that she did not handle Chaz’s transition journey well
In a 2020 interview with SheKnows, Cher candidly expressed her initial reaction to her son’s coming out as transgender. She revealed that the news took her aback, as it was unexpected. Nevertheless, she went on to share that despite her initial shock, she had no choice but to come to terms with and accept the reality of Chaz’s transition.
The 77-year-old emphasized that her son was genuinely happy and content with this significant life change. “It took me a minute. Because you’ve been with a child for 40 years, and then all of a sudden,” Cher confessed, “but you know what? Chaz was so happy!”
