During the discussion with PEOPLE, Yearwood fondly reminisced about their initial involvement with the Carter’s initiative, Habitat for Humanity, sharing how they traveled to New Orleans two years after Katrina to merely use it for a publicity stunt. “The first time we got on a site, we thought we were going to take some photographs, maybe hold some tools,” the 59-year-old admitted to the news outlet. “We framed a wall that day.”

Brooks also admired the iconic couple’s strong and enduring partnership as husband and wife, providing profound inspiration for them. “They’ve inspired us in a lot of ways, in the ways you expect: humanity, humbleness, work ethic,” the 61-year-old shared. “But they’ve also inspired us by their example as husband and wife. We worked beside them for the last 15 years, and you notice right away they bicker back and forth about the right way to do things. That kind of works for us, too!”
