Jimmy Carter Inspires Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood To Playfully Banter To Strengthen Their Marriage

Long-time partners Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood praised former U.S. president Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, for being a role model to them. Their connection with the Carters was forged following 2005’s devastating Hurricane Katrina when they participated as volunteers in the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project.

Recently, the famous musical duo stepped into the spotlight as they assumed the leadership of the Carters’ Work Project in Charlotte, North Carolina. Following their new engagement, the couple shared in an interview how their relationship with the Carters has had a profound impact on their marriage.

During the discussion with PEOPLE, Yearwood fondly reminisced about their initial involvement with the Carter’s initiative, Habitat for Humanity, sharing how they traveled to New Orleans two years after Katrina to merely use it for a publicity stunt. “The first time we got on a site, we thought we were going to take some photographs, maybe hold some tools,” the 59-year-old admitted to the news outlet. “We framed a wall that day.”

However, their plans took an unexpected turn when they arrived and discovered that the former President and First Lady were actively engaged in the hands-on work of building homes. She went on to explain that witnessing the Carters’ dedication and genuine involvement in the project profoundly impacted them and served as a catalyst for a change of mindset.

Brooks and Yearwood conveyed their profound gratitude for the Carters’ unswerving commitment to philanthropy and their unwavering devotion to effecting positive change on a global scale. “We knew we loved the Carters, and we fell more in love with them just getting a chance to work alongside them,” the country musicians told the outlet. “We love that Habitat for Humanity is about spreading love. It is about creating community.”

Brooks also admired the iconic couple’s strong and enduring partnership as husband and wife, providing profound inspiration for them. “They’ve inspired us in a lot of ways, in the ways you expect: humanity, humbleness, work ethic,” the 61-year-old shared. “But they’ve also inspired us by their example as husband and wife. We worked beside them for the last 15 years, and you notice right away they bicker back and forth about the right way to do things. That kind of works for us, too!”
