87-Year-Old Julie Andrews Spotted Shopping For Flowers In The Hamptons

Veteran Hollywood sweetheart Julie Andrews was recently spotted at the Sag Harbor farmers’ market in The Hamptons on Long Island, New York. The 87-year-old looked bright as she walked around with a cane and flashed smiles at onlookers. She picked up some flowers and two boxes of Lu Petit Ecolier European dark chocolate cookies as she made for her car.

Julie looked chic and casual for the outing in a light gray long-sleeved top, a pair of fitted trousers, and a white scarf. She accessorized with a beige tote bag, white sneakers, and gold earrings. A man held an umbrella for her as she made for the passenger seat of her SUV as it began to rain.

Julie grew up with a love for acting

Julie grew up watching her vaudeville performer parents and picked interest in the craft. It is no surprise that she was a natural, earning an Academy Award for best actress in her first feature film, Mary Poppins. “It was a brand new thing in my life that I’d never done before. It was for Walt Disney, of course, and the songs in Mary Poppins had a kind of Vaudeville quality to them,” she said.

“I think it’s what attracted me to the role, because all that kind of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and Jolly Holiday music was very much like the kind of things that you hear in English vaudeville,” she added. Mary Poppins became the highest-grossing film of 1964, earning thirteen Academy Awards nominations — a record high for a Walt Disney Studios movie.

Julie’s ex-husband inspired the nanny costume

Julie added that the nanny costume, which was the idea of her then-husband Tony Walton, helped her understand the role better. Tony explained to her that the dress depicted Mary Poppins — fun fabric lining on the inside but stricter outward designs. “Because I think that’s what gives her pleasure. Very formal on the outside and a little bit wicked on the inside,” Tony told her then.

“It completely gave me a clue as to her character. Big, big help for me,” she recalled with appreciation. Besides playing that famous character, Julie continues to be remembered for her role in the classic film The Sound Of Music, released a year after Mary Poppins. More recently, she voiced the narrator Lady Whistledown in the Netflix series, Bridgerton.
