David Attenborough is still working at 97
Get ready to be enchanted by the world around us once again! David Attenborough has been working in TV broadcasting for almost seven decades and now, at 97, he is gearing up to present a new television series known as Planet Earth III on the BBC.
Planet Earth has long been a fan-favorite and Attenborough has become something of a mainstay on the program. He was there for the very first entry in the series back in 2006 and for the sequel a whole decade later. What can fans expect from Attenborough’s return and this new entry, which has been five years in the making?
This latest installment of Planet Earth had actually been commissioned back in 2019. It immediately faced delays because of the pandemic. It is reported that Attenborough, as of late August, has already started filming his introductory scenes and episode narration.
For executive producer Mike Gunton, Attenborough simply had to be involved in this project. “Planet Earth wouldn’t be Planet Earth without David,” he said, “so I’m delighted he is presenting the third series.”
Already, fans can imagine the picturesque and inspirational presentation the first episode will bring. “The opening of the series with David was filmed in the beautiful British countryside in exactly the location where Charles Darwin used to walk whilst thinking over his Earth-shaking ideas about evolution,” shared Gunton. “It seemed the perfect place for David to introduce Planet Earth III and remind us of both the wonders and the fragility of our planet.”
Attenborough will be narrating across a new Planet Earth season comprised of eight episodes. Seven of the episodes will primarily feature up-close footage of animals from all over the world. The remaining episode shall focus on the human “heroes” dedicated to protecting various species.
One of those heroes could certainly be Attenborough, whose work for environmental advocacy has overlapped almost completely with his broadcasting career. He has backed movements and launched appeals dedicated to environmental conservation. He’s also backed campaigns dedicated to stopping deep sea mining, raising awareness of its effects on marine life. Attenborough has received numerous accolades throughout his life, including the Michael Faraday Prize, the International Cosmos Prize, and an RSPB Medal, celebrating his dedicated protection of birds.
Planet Earth III is expected to be released this autumn, 2023.
