Sinéad O’connor’s death at the age of 56 recently shocked her fans, family, and colleagues, who are really finding it hard to accept that she is gone. The singer’s family confirmed the tragic news in a statement to RTE. “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad,” the statement reads. “Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this difficult time.”
Although no medical cause of her death has been revealed, Sinead went through a series of tumultuous events before her death. She lost her 17-year-old son last year due to suicide and canceled all her gigs in June 2022 to focus on her “health and well-being.” In March this year, the singer had her last public outing, attending the RTÉ Choice Music Prize, where she looked notably healthy and happy.

At the event, Sinéad received the award for Best Irish Classic Album in honor of her 1990 album, I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got. The late singer smiled as she received her award and seized the chance to tell “each and every member of Ireland’s refugee community” that they were “very welcome in Ireland.”

“I love you very much, and I wish you happiness,” she said, closing her acceptance speech. Sinéad is also known for her notable award-winning songs like “Nothing Compares 2 U,” written by the late Prince, and “No Man’s Woman.” Aside from music, the 56-year-old was a dedicated mother to four grown children, one of whom she tragically lost in the past year.
Sinead’s health and dealing with loss
Sinéad’s last tweet was dedicated to her late son, Shane, who died in January 2022. “Been living as undead night creature since. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. I am lost in the bardo without him,” a heartbroken Sinéad tweeted just last week.
Before her unfortunate loss, Sinéad battled mental health struggles of her own. The Grammy Award winner was reported missing and suicidal in 2016 following rumors of her overdosing the year before. However, she came forward to deny the “false and malicious gossip,” adding that she was “far too f–king happy for that.”
