Candace Cameron Bure has responded after being under fire for allegedly refusing a queer character on Fuller House. The chaos ensued after a video was shared on social media in the past week, where Miss Benny spoke about experiencing homophobia on set.
Miss Benny, who recently came out as a transgender female, played a gay character named Casey on the show. According to the viral TikTok video, Miss Benny implied that Bure did not want her on the show, although she did not mention her name.
Did Bure want Miss Benny fired?
Per Benny’s claims, someone asked, “Was it Candace?” and the actress proceeded to give more details about her experience. “I was on ‘Fuller House,’ I played Casey, the first gay character on the ‘Full House’ franchise. One of the Tanner sisters is very publicly ‘not for the girls,’ if that makes sense?” she responded. “I remember I got sat down by the writers and the studio to basically warn me how this person, allegedly, was trying to get the character removed and not have a queer character on the show.”

Miss Benny also added that although she had a good time filming the show, one of the “Tanner sisters,” played by Bure and Jodie Sweetin, would not speak with her. “To this day, despite working on the show every day for two weeks straight, I have only had a conversation with one of the Tanner sisters.” People in the comments assumed Bure was the likely culprit and expressed displeasure at her.
Bure responds to critics
In a statement shared with Fox News Digital, Bure responded to allegations of pushing for Miss Benny’s layoff in a statement. “I never asked Miss Benny’s character to be removed from ‘Fuller House’ and did not ask the writers, producers or studio executives to not have queer characters on the show. ‘Fuller House’ has always welcomed a wide range of characters,” she explained. “I thought Miss Benny did a great job as ‘Casey’ on the show.”
In response to news of her not speaking with Miss Benny, Bure said she had a “really fun time shooting the show with actors that were willing to talk” to her. “We didn’t share any scenes together, so we didn’t get a chance to talk much while filming on set,” Bure added. “I wish Miss Benny only the best.”
