Judy Craymer, one of the forefront brains behind the production of Mamma Mia, might be on to a splendid idea that will feature Meryl Streep and Cher on our screens. Judy produced the original stage production and the two films; she now wants to make a third movie with those fan favorites.
The idea for another film is not confirmed yet, as it would require the permission of Andersson and Ulvaeus— the ABBA duo who co-own the rights to Mamma Mia alongside Judy. “We want to do another movie, and they’re [being cautious],” Judy said.
Judy wants to bring back fan favorite characters
Judy revealed that she wants to bring back Meryl Streep and Cher’s characters, respectively Donna and Ruby, who was Donna’s mother. “It’s in its earliest stages. There is a story there, and I do think Meryl should come back — and if the script is right, she would, I think, because she really loved playing Donna,” Judy told Deadline.

Some original cast members of the films are also looking forward to a third installment. Colin Firth, who played Harry, told Good Morning America that he’s up for another Mamma Mia film. Pierce Brosnan, “I’m in, too. Sure. It’s criminal how much fun you have on that movie. I think everybody would be in.”
Judy has had the idea for a third film for a long time
In 2020, Judy told Daily Mail that she had been working on the film idea, stating that “there’s meant to be a trilogy.” The first two Mamma Mia films were released 10 years apart, and for the next, the “Littlestar” trio have to be in agreement.
“That’s the story of the last 25 years — there’s always a sense of caution from them, and we’re all getting older now. Obviously, anything to do with the music, they have to be okay with,” she said of Andersson and Ulvaeus, who along with her make up Littlestar Services, Ltd., the global producer of theatre, film, television, publishing and music.
Judy is currently focused on a new UK reality show Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream, on ITV. The show seeks to find the next Sophie and Sky for the West End production of the musical.
