Matthew Perry is discussing it all in his new memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, including some of his high-profile relationships. Among them, the one he had with actress Julia Roberts in the ’90s after she appeared in an episode of Friends, the two of them dating for a while at the time.
Matthew revealed that Julia was interested in making a guest appearance on Friends, but only wanted to appear alongside Matthew and be in Chandler’s storyline. He said he sent her three dozen roses and a card convincing her to take the gig. Of course, she agreed, and she plays an old classmate of Chandler’s in the episode.
He continued, “Thus began a three-month-long courtship by daily faxes. This was pre-internet, pre-cell phones — all our exchanges were done by fax. And there were many; hundreds.” He said that “three or four times a day I would sit by my fax machine and watch the piece of paper slowly revealing her next missive.”
Eventually, the faxes turned into phone calls, and then they met up in person. Matthew said he has a lot of fond memories of their time together, but ultimately it couldn’t last. He shared, “Dating Julia Roberts had been too much for me. I had been constantly certain that she was going to break up with me. Why would she not?”
He added, “I was not enough; I could never be enough; I was broken, bent, unloveable. So instead of facing the inevitable agony of losing her, I broke up with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts.”
