Ana De Armas’ Accent In Marilyn Monroe Biopic Ridiculed

Actress Ana de Armas recently had her accent ridiculed and picked apart in the newest trailer for the Marilyn Monroe biopic. Many people have commented that de Armas’s Spanish accent is still very much there, but it’s worth noting pretty much all of the movies she’s ever been in sport her Spanish accent, having grown up in Cuba and coming to the states in her adulthood.

One person posted on Twitter, “i know the movie hasn’t come out yet but Blonde starring Ana de Armas looks stunning and the scenes gives me chills but i know y’all still hear her accent.. like it’s STRONG. i am very surprised they thought she sounded like marilyn because she literally doesn’t. looks ? yes.”

Fans have also commented that the accent, while not necessarily a bad thing to naturally possess, is rather distracting, considering Marilyn Monroe had a typical American accent. This even confused some fans, as this biopic is perfect Oscar material, people are questioning why she wouldn’t want to try and perfect Marilyn’s distinct, American voice?

Despite of all this, de Armas did note that she underwent nine months of professional dialect training for the role, and after seeing the recent trailer, fans are wondering what she’s got to show for it. Now with this being said, fans are coming to de Armas’s defense as well.

“let me remind those commenting on ana de armas’ accent playing marilyn monroe that we have a long history of american actors botching accents of other nationalities in film and you don’t blink twice. you’ll survive,” one fan writes in her defense. Some fans have also just stated that they simply don’t care about an accent, that it doesn’t make or break the film for them.

Essentially, movie buffs on Twitter are divided over this one. Despite any divisiveness, it’s still a highly-anticipated film as another star gets the biopic treatment right on the heels of rock n’ roll king, Elvis Presley.
