Paul Fusco is best known as the person responsible for the ’80s series ALF. He was the creator, director, producer, writer, puppeteer, and voice of the series. Born in 1953, Paul lived in Connecticut. He started gaining interest in television and film while in high school, working in the audio-visual department.
After high school, he started performing on local children’s television shows and found joy in puppeteering and stage magic. In the ’80s, he started working with puppeteers Bob Fappiano and Lisa Buckley and they worked on several television specials for HBO and Showtime.
Paul had the idea for ALF based on a puppet he had at home. He said that it annoyed his family and friends so it gave him the perfect idea for a sitcom. He teamed up with Tom Patchett and they pitched the series to NBC. It was on the air from 1986 until 1990, although the ALF character still lives on today. The series spawned several spin-offs including an animated series and a TV movie.
When ALF was canceled in 1990, ABC offered to create a TV movie about ALF that would serve as closure. It was called Project ALF and starred Martin Sheen. Paul has continued to appear on other shows and specials with the ALF puppet including Young Sheldon and Duncanville in recent years. In 2012, Paul confirmed that a CGI-live action ALF movie was in the works but the project was sadly canned in 2018. However, in 2019, Paul shared that he was working on a reboot, so maybe there’s hope for ALF fans!
Paul is now 68 years old and is still married to his wife Linda, who he wed in 1978. They have one child together, a son named Christopher.
