Sequel

It has been one year since we lost Diane Keaton. The Oscar-winning star of Annie Hall died on October 11, 2025, at the age of 79. Her family shared the cause a few days later in a statement to People, as reported by NBC News. They said their "beloved Diane" had "passed away from pneumonia." They asked that anyone wishing to honor her give to a local food bank or an animal shelter, because she loved her animals and cared deeply about people without homes. Keaton's daughter, Dexter Keaton White, marked the anniversary with an emotional Instagram tribute featuring a black-and-white photograph from her 2021 wedding. "One year without you, mom," she wrote, reflecting on how difficult it has been to adjust to life without her mother. Dexter said she particularly misses being able to call Keaton, hug her, and go on adventures together. Her younger brother, Duke, also remembered their mother on Instagram, sharing photographs from their years together and a brief message of love. She was Kay in The Godfather films. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Annie Hall and was nominated three more times, for Reds, Marvin's Room and Something's Gotta Give. Later audiences adored her in Father of the Bride and The First Wives Club. She adopted her daughter Dexter and her son Duke in her fifties. At the Oscars this March, her The Family Stone co-star Rachel McAdams reminded the room what mattered most to her. "She wore so many hats, literally and figuratively, actress, artist, author, activist, but no hat more important to her than being a mother to her two children," McAdams said, according to TMZ. Released in 2005, The Family Stone starred Keaton as Sybil Stone, the outspoken mother of a large, close-knit family gathering for Christmas. What initially appears to be a holiday comedy about clashing personalities gradually reveals a much more emotional story, as Sybil's children learn that their mother's breast cancer has returned. The film ends with the family reuniting the following Christmas after Sybil's death, with her photograph displayed in the family home. That bittersweet ending now carries additional weight following Keaton's death in real life. Searchlight Pictures announced on September 23 that Jean Smart, 75, has joined 'The Families Stone' as a new love interest for Craig T. Nelson's character, Yahoo Entertainment reported. The story picks up 20 years after the death of Sybil Stone, the mother Keaton played in the 2005 original, and filming is set to begin in New York this fall. Writer and director Thomas Bezucha, who is returning for the sequel, had already begun working on the screenplay when Keaton died. In a November 2025 interview with CNN, he revealed that he had spent months imagining the Stone family without Sybil, making the actress's real-life death especially painful. "I've been haunted by the loss of Sybil for months now while I worked on it," he explained. Bezucha said the news strengthened his determination to honor Keaton and do justice to the surviving characters, particularly the family she helped bring to life on screen. McAdams and Sarah Jessica Parker are among the returning cast. Keaton's friends have never stopped talking about her, from Goldie Hawn's emotional tribute in the days after her death to McAdams calling her "a legend with no end" on Oscar night. A year later, that phrase still fits. THE FIRST WIVES CLUB, from left: Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler, 1996. © Paramount / Courtesy Everett Collection
