Johnny Carson

On the evening of Friday, June 21, 1991, a Nissan Pathfinder went over the edge of a narrow road above the Pacific near Cayucos, California. The driver was Richard Wolcott Carson, 39, the middle son of Johnny Carson. Nearly four weeks later, his father walked back onto the stage of The Tonight Show and did something he had avoided for almost 30 years. He talked about his family on camera. Carson was born in Corning, Iowa, on October 23, 1925, and Friday, October 23, 2026, marks 101 years since his birth. He died of emphysema in Los Angeles on January 23, 2005, at 79. In all his years behind the desk, few nights were harder than the one he spent saying goodbye to Rick. One member of his own staff paid a price for that night. What Happened On The Road Above Cayucos? Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show in the early 1990s / Everett Collection According to UPI, the crash happened around 6 p.m. on Cayucos Drive, a paved service road off Highway 1 north of San Luis Obispo. The Pathfinder was moving at no more than 20 mph when it slipped over the edge. It dropped about 125 feet and rolled several times. It came to rest upside down in a concrete culvert. Rick was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle. He had gone there to take pictures. The Deseret News reported that he had stopped at a scenic overlook above the ocean, and camera equipment was found along the road. California Highway Patrol officer Russ Johnson told reporters, "It appears his attention was just diverted. He wasn't traveling at a high rate of speed or carelessly." NBC said it was "deeply shocked and saddened." A private funeral was held in Los Angeles that Sunday. Johnny Carson made no public statement in the days that followed. Rick was one of three sons from Carson's first marriage to Jody Wolcott. His brothers were Christopher and Cory. By the time of the accident, the camera had become the center of his life. Who Was Rick Carson Away From His Famous Father? (NBC/courtesy Everett Collection) According to People, Rick served in the U.S. Navy and later turned to photography. He was shooting nature pictures on the coast when he died. Before that, he had spent years in television himself. Producer Andy Friendly described those years in a memoir excerpt published by Broadcasting & Cable. He wrote that Rick worked as stage manager and later associate director on Tom Snyder's Tomorrow at NBC. Rick picked much of that show's music, and Friendly counted him among his closest friends. Friendly also wrote candidly that Rick struggled to find work that felt meaningful. The relationship between father and son was not simple. Mike Thomas, who completed Bill Zehme's Carson biography Carson the Magnificent, told People that "Johnny lamented the fact that he was not much closer to his sons." That distance is part of what made the night of his return so striking. The family suffered another loss decades later. Christopher Carson died in 2025 at 74, according to iHeart, which cited family friend Howard Smith on the Nostalgia Tonight podcast. Cory, a classical guitarist, is the last of the three brothers. What Did Carson Say The Night He Came Back? THE TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, Johnny Carson, (aired June 24, 1968), 19621992. ph: Paul Wilson / TV Guide / courtesy Everett Collection Carson returned on Wednesday, July 17, 1991. The Deseret News called it his first Tonight Show since Rick's death. He began by thanking his viewers. "First of all I want to thank all of you who were so very thoughtful, compassionate and sympathetic with your letters," he said. Then he fixed something that had clearly bothered him. Newspapers had run Rick's driver's license photo, so Carson showed a real portrait of his son instead. "I don't think any of you would want to be remembered by the photo on your driver's license," he told the audience. He also spoke about Michael Landon. His close friend had called to offer condolences while fighting cancer himself. "A week later Michael Landon was dead," Carson said. "These have not been the most happy several weeks." He closed the show with Rick's own pictures. According to People, Carson aired a series of his son's photographs and called him "an exuberant young man, fun to be around." He said Rick "tried so darn hard to please." He remembered that his son "had a laugh that was contagious as could be." The segment ran long. Producer Fred de Cordova, who had run the show since 1970, signaled Carson to wrap it up. According to Vanity Fair, biographer Bill Zehme said Carson's response was swift. "He took Freddie off the floor, and he was never allowed back on," Zehme told the magazine. Ten months later, Carson would face the cameras one last time, and Rick would be on his mind again. Who Was Missing From Carson's Perfect Evening? Johnny Carson (right), host of THE JOHNNY CARSON SHOW, and his wife Jody Carson/Everett The final Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson aired May 22, 1992. It came almost 30 years after his first night as host in 1962. Near the end, he introduced his wife, Alexis Maas, and his sons Chris and Cory. "I realize that being the offspring of somebody who is constantly in the public eye is not easy," he said, according to People. "So guys, I want you to know I love you, and I hope your old man hasn't caused you too much discomfort." He never hosted another series. He kept to himself in retirement and rarely gave interviews. He also declined to appear at NBC's 75th anniversary celebration. Thomas told People that Carson "would grieve for Ricky to the end of his life." The proof came on that last broadcast. Before he said goodnight to America, Carson looked at his two sons and spoke about the third. "It would have been a perfect evening," he said, "if their brother, Rick, had been here with us."
