Seven children lined up on a grand staircase and sang "So Long, Farewell" one by one, and the smallest of them sang the last goodnight. That moment has played in living rooms for 61 years now. The Sound of Music premiered on March 2, 1965. It went on to win five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and it became the movie families watched together every time it came back on television.
