Ben E. King would have celebrated his 88th birthday on September 28, more than a decade after his death. Born Benjamin Earl Nelson in Henderson, North Carolina, in 1938, the legendary soul singer gave the world some of its most enduring love songs, including "Spanish Harlem," "Save the Last Dance for Me," and "Stand by Me." King died on April 30, 2015, at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey. He was 76, but his unmistakable voice continues reaching new generations of listeners. King's rise to fame began with an unexpected change in one of America's most popular vocal groups. He was singing with the Five Crowns when the Drifters' manager, George Treadwell, recruited the group to replace the existing Drifters lineup in 1958. With King as lead vocalist, the group recorded hits including "There Goes My Baby," "This Magic Moment," and "Save the Last Dance for Me." But a dispute over money led to his departure in 1960, setting the stage for a solo career that would produce his most famous recording. Ben E. King Almost Gave "Stand By Me" To The Drifters Surprisingly, King never intended to record "Stand by Me" himself. He had originally written the song for the Drifters, but the group's management rejected it. During an early solo recording session with producers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, the musicians found themselves with a little extra studio time. King remembered the unfinished song, played it for the producers, and they decided to record it. Stoller helped create the unforgettable bass line, while Leiber worked with King on the lyrics. The resulting recording reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1961 and topped the R&B chart. The song's inspiration was deeply personal. King drew partly from an old gospel hymn and wrote the romantic ballad with his wife, Betty, in mind. But 25 years later, "Stand by Me" found an entirely new audience when director Rob Reiner used it as the title song for his 1986 coming-of-age film starring Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O'Connell. The recording returned to the charts and climbed to No. 9 on the Hot 100. King later marveled that younger listeners embraced the song as a celebration of friendship, while the original generation had heard it as a love song. "Stand By Me" Became A Timeless American Classic View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hit Songs Of The Past (@hitsongsofthepast) The renewed success helped cement King's place in music history. In 1999, performing rights organization BMI ranked "Stand by Me" as the fourth most-performed song of the 20th century, with approximately seven million performances. The Library of Congress selected the original recording for the National Recording Registry in 2014, recognizing its cultural and historical importance. King had already entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Drifters in 1988, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame honored "Stand by Me" with its Towering Song Award in 2012. Beyond his music, King established the Stand By Me Foundation in 1998 to support young people and disadvantaged communities. He continued performing and recording for decades, even as his earliest songs became standards covered by countless other artists. What began as a rejected composition for the Drifters became a beloved anthem of love, loyalty, and friendship. On what would have been his 88th birthday, King's greatest legacy can still be heard whenever that familiar bass line begins and another generation joins in singing "Stand by Me."
