For more than a decade, Cheers entertained audiences with its unforgettable characters, sharp humor, and hilarious moments inside a Boston bar. However, behind the laughter, one actor's unexpected departure sparked a controversy that eventually led to one of the sitcom's most unusual character deaths. According to Remind, Jay Thomas, who played Eddie LeBec, the charming hockey player who captured Carla Tortelli's heart, appeared in nine episodes of the beloved NBC comedy. His character became a memorable part of the show after marrying Carla, played by Rhea Perlman. Yet his time on the series ended abruptly following a controversial comment about his co-star during a radio broadcast. During one broadcast, a caller reportedly asked him about his experience working on the sitcom. According to former show writer Ken Levine, the actor responded with a joke about how unpleasant it was to kiss Perlman during their romantic scenes. "It’s brutal," he said. "I have to kiss Rhea Perlman." The remark reportedly upset the actress, who happened to be listening. In his 2022 memoir, director James Burrows confirmed that the production team took the comment seriously, explaining that insulting Perlman meant disrespecting the close-knit cast. In a 2012 GQ interview, Thomas maintained that his joke referred to Carla rather than Perlman herself. The actress also disputed claims that she demanded his removal, explaining that she had concerns about keeping Carla closely connected to the bar's regular characters if her marriage continued. Regardless of the conflicting recollections, the writers eventually ended Eddie's storyline in the Season 8 episode "Death Takes a Holiday on Ice," which aired in November 1989. After leaving professional hockey to perform as a penguin in a traveling ice show, Eddie died in an accident involving a Zamboni. Despite their contrasting personalities, the characters developed a romance that gave viewers another side of the usually sarcastic waitress. Their relationship eventually led to marriage and the birth of twins, with the pregnancy storyline reflecting Perlman's real-life pregnancy. However, Eddie's death brought another surprising revelation when Carla discovered at his funeral that he had secretly married another woman and fathered a second set of twins. The outrageous twist allowed the sitcom to turn a tragic development into one of its signature darkly comedic stories. Beyond his brief appearance on the legendary sitcom, Thomas enjoyed a successful career as an actor, comedian, and radio personality. Born in Texas and raised in New Orleans, he established himself in radio before landing television roles in Mork & Mindy, Family Ties, and The Love Boat. He later became familiar to audiences through Murphy Brown, earning two Emmy Awards for his guest appearances. Thomas died in August 2017 at age 69, leaving behind a career that spanned decades of television and broadcasting. Although his Cheers character appeared in relatively few episodes, Eddie's unusual departure remains one of the sitcom's most memorable behind-the-scenes stories.
