Charles Bronson Met His Future Wife While She Was Married To His ‘Great Escape’ Co-Star

Charles Bronson was born 105 years ago in a Pennsylvania coal town. The woman he spent 22 years with was married to his co-star when they met.

Charles Bronson was born 105 years ago, on November 3, 1921, in a Pennsylvania coal town called Ehrenfeld, and for most of his life he looked like a man who had been carved out of it. He once described his own face as “a rock quarry that someone has dynamited,” in a line the Seattle Times recalled when he died. Audiences saw the hard man of The Magnificent Seven and Death Wish, and almost nobody saw the rest.

The rest is a love story, and an unlikely one. The woman Bronson spent 22 years with was married to one of his co-stars on the day they met, and by the end of her life he would not leave her side. To understand why she mattered so much, you have to start in Scooptown.

How Poor Was Charles Bronson Growing Up?

He was born Charles Dennis Buchinsky, the 11th of 15 children of Lithuanian immigrants, in the section of Ehrenfeld locals called Scooptown. The family was so poor that at 6 he was sent to school in his sister’s dress, because there was nothing else for him to wear, a detail reported by the AP and by the New York Times in its 2003 obituary. His father, a miner, died when Charles was about 10, and the boy followed him underground. Accounts differ on exactly how young he was, but the AP put his pay at $1 for every ton of coal he dug.

World War II got him out. He served in the Army Air Forces and in 1945 flew as an aerial gunner on B-29s out of Guam. When he came home, he drifted toward acting, and in 1954, on his agent’s advice, he traded Buchinsky for Bronson. The usual explanation is that a Russian-sounding name was a liability during the Red Scare, although Turner Classic Movies has questioned that story, and another version credits the Bronson Gate on the Paramount lot.

By the early 1960s, he was a working tough guy in pictures. Then he was cast as Danny, the claustrophobic tunnel digger in The Great Escape, and everything changed.

Who Was Jill Ireland Married To When She Met Charles Bronson?

One of his fellow prisoners in The Great Escape, released in 1963, was the Scottish actor David McCallum, who would soon be a TV star on The Man from U.N.C.L.E. McCallum was married to the English actress Jill Ireland, and that film is how Bronson came to know her. Plenty of colorful lines about that first meeting have been repeated over the years, but none of them can be traced to a reliable source, so we will leave them where they belong, in the rumor pile.

What is on the record is what happened next. Ireland and McCallum divorced, and she married Bronson on October 5, 1968. Their daughter Zuleika was born on August 4, 1971, and they later adopted a second daughter, Katrina. The couple also became one of the most frequent pairings in the movies, appearing together in more than a dozen films over the next two decades.

Bronson did not like explaining himself—to interviewers or anyone else. “Don’t ask me to explain a mystique,” he told the New York Times in 1974, the year Death Wish came out. With Ireland, he never had to.

Death Wish turned Paul Kersey into a franchise, with four sequels, and Bronson kept making action pictures into the 1990s. The director Michael Winner liked to tell a story about pitching him the original film. Bronson said, “I’d like to do it.” Winner asked, “The movie?” and Bronson answered, “No, shoot muggers.” Whether or not the exchange happened word for word, it captured the deadpan humor his friends said the public never saw.

Off screen, the 1980s brought one loss after another. In 1984, Ireland was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a mastectomy. Then on November 7, 1989, her son Jason McCallum, whom she and David McCallum had adopted, died of an accidental overdose at 27.

“The worst moment of my life was when I lost my son Jason in 1989,” McCallum later said, as Hello! reported. Ireland was already very sick by then.

Why Was Jill Ireland Buried With Charles Bronson?

Jill Ireland died at their home in Malibu on May 18, 1990. She was 54, and Bronson was at her side. He did not marry again for eight years, and when he did, in December 1998, it was to Kim Weeks, who stayed with him to the end.

Charles Bronson died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on August 30, 2003, at 81. The AP gave pneumonia as the cause, and his death certificate also listed lung cancer and heart disease. David McCallum outlived them both by two decades, until his own death in 2023, which we reported here.

Bronson was laid to rest in West Windsor, Vermont, a long way from Hollywood, and Jill Ireland’s ashes were buried with him. The boy from Scooptown who once had to wear his sister’s dress to school ended up sharing a grave with the woman he met on the set of a prison-camp movie, and after everything the two of them lived through, it is hard to imagine either of them wanting it any other way.
