88-Year-Old Doc Brown Star Christopher Lloyd Opens Up About His Private Struggle In New Memoir

by Dana Daly

Published October 22, 2026

Christopher Lloyd

Christopher Lloyd turns 88 today, Oct. 22, 2026. He was born on Oct. 22, 1938, in Stamford, Connecticut, and five days after this birthday he will do something he has never done in more than six decades of acting. On Oct. 27, Grand Central Publishing releases In My Own Time, the first memoir from the man who gave us Doc Brown and Reverend Jim.

The publisher’s description promises “an intimate portrait drawn from the defining moments of his life.” It runs 256 pages. Among those defining moments is a private struggle that many fans never connected to the wild-haired inventor they grew up with. The Christopher Lloyd memoir finally puts it on the record.

What Was Christopher Lloyd’s Childhood Really Like?

The book opens at Waveny, the Connecticut estate where Lloyd spent his early years. His maternal grandfather, Lewis Henry Lapham, was one of the founders of Texaco and built Waveny House, according to Wikipedia and the local news site New Canaanite. His mother, Ruth Lapham Lloyd, was a singer.

The Lapham family turned the estate over to the town of New Canaan in 1967, as both New Canaanite and the Darienite reported. Lloyd went back to speak at a Waveny fundraiser in 2017 and shared a story from when he was “seven, eight, nine years old.” He found his father’s cigars and tried one in the bathtub.

“Ultimately I got very sick. Very sick,” Lloyd told the crowd, according to the Darienite. “And it broke me of my addiction to smoking.”

The memoir describes a lonelier boyhood. According to the publisher and to coverage on JoBlo, he was raised mostly by governesses and spent much of his time alone on the grounds. Both note that he watched his mother be institutionalized. He was later sent to an upper crust boarding school. That quiet boy later threw away the biggest script of his life.

Why Did He Throw Out the ‘Back to the Future’ Script?

Before Hollywood, Lloyd belonged to the theater. He trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York under Sanford Meisner. “There was always this kind of thing that the theater was my home,” he said, as Looper reported.

So when his agent sent the Back to the Future script while he was filming in Mexico, he barely looked at it. “I went through it. I just wasn’t into it,” Lloyd said on TODAY in 2021. “I put it in the wastepaper basket.”

A friend who was with him reminded him of his own motto about never leaving a stone unturned, according to Looper. Lloyd fished the pages back out. “I still wasn’t sure of Doc, but went back and met (director) Bob Zemeckis, and that was that,” he told TODAY.

His bond with Michael J. Fox outlasted all three films. When Fox returned to acting on Shrinking this year, Lloyd cheered on his old co-star online. In September he also reconnected with his Part III sweetheart, as DYR covered when Lloyd and Mary Steenburgen reunited 36 years later. Doc Brown was not the first role he nearly turned down, though.

How Did a Sitcom Skeptic Win Two Emmys on ‘Taxi’?

Lloyd had little interest in sitcoms in the late 1970s. “In the theater, there was a kind of scorn, if I may say, for sitcoms,” he once told The Washington Post, as Looper later reported. He admitted he arrived with “a little bit of an attitude.”

He took the Taxi audition anyway. Jim Ignatowski was written for a single first season episode, “Paper Marriage,” in which Jim officiates Latka’s green card wedding. He became a regular in season two, according to Looper and Wikipedia.

The burned out former hippie earned Lloyd the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 1982 and again in 1983, according to Wikipedia and TCM. He won a third Emmy in 1992 as a guest lead on Road to Avonlea. Looking back on that sitcom audition years later, he joked to GQ, “It ruined my life.”

Is Christopher Lloyd Still Working at 88?

He is. His movie career began with Taber in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest in 1975. Judge Doom in Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Uncle Fester in The Addams Family followed. In 2024 he earned an Emmy nomination for a guest role on Hacks, as both Wikipedia and his publisher note.

In 2025 he returned in Nobody 2 as the father of Bob Odenkirk’s character, a retired FBI agent who still knows his way around a firearm. He also joined Netflix’s Wednesday as Professor Orloff, a teacher who appears mostly as a head kept alive in a jar. The Hollywood Reporter detailed the effects work behind the role.

Lloyd is still on the convention circuit, too. NBC 10 in Providence reported that he will join a Who Framed Roger Rabbit reunion at Rhode Island Comic Con, Nov. 6 to 8. The bigger news this fall is on the page.

What Is the Struggle He Finally Writes About?

According to the publisher’s description, In My Own Time covers Lloyd’s struggles with addiction. JoBlo and retailer listings for the book describe his recovery and what they call a hard fought journey to sobriety. It is the first time he has told that part of his story in his own words, at book length.

The publisher frames the memoir as the story of a boy who grew up isolated on a vast estate and then left that world behind for the stage. In acting, it says, he found the connections he had missed as a child. Lloyd teased the finished manuscript on social media in May, telling fans that readers are in for some serious stuff on Oct. 27. The boy who once swore off cigars in a Waveny bathtub would later face a far harder fight. At 88, he is ready to tell readers how he found his way to sobriety.
