‘Little House’ Star Melissa Gilbert Reacts After Judge Throws Out Charges Against Husband Timothy Busfield

by Dana Daly

Published October 19, 2026

Melissa Gilbert spent most of 2026 saying very little in public. On Friday, October 16, a judge in Albuquerque dismissed the grand jury indictment against her husband, actor and director Timothy Busfield, on four counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor. That same day, the 62-year-old Little House on the Prairie star posted one line to Instagram, and it came from a film her generation grew up with.

The ruling did not declare Busfield innocent, and it may not be the end of the case. Here is what the court decided, and the words Gilbert chose to mark the day.

What Did The Judge Actually Rule In The Timothy Busfield Case?

According to NBC News, State District Judge Joseph Montano granted a defense motion to dismiss the indictment, citing prosecutorial misconduct and errors that undermined the grand jury process. ABC News reported that the judge found the prosecutor “failed to act in a fair and impartial manner.” He wrote that the prosecutor’s actions “had the practical effect of unilaterally withholding witnesses requested by the grand jurors.”

That last point came out at a September hearing. NBC News reported that the court heard audio of grand jurors asking to hear from more witnesses. Fayerberg, one of Busfield’s attorneys, said prosecutors had wrongly told jurors that subpoenas were needed, even though defense witnesses were “present, available and willing to testify.”

The order leaves a door open. ABC News reported that the state “remains free to institute new criminal proceedings against the defendant,” and Entertainment Weekly reported that prosecutors can take the case to a new grand jury. Nancy Laflin, a spokesperson for the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office, said the office is “evaluating our options to determine how we will proceed.” As of Saturday, prosecutors had not announced whether they will seek a new indictment.

Fayerberg told ABC affiliate KOAT that Busfield was “relieved” and was crying after the order came down. “It has ruined his life,” she said. So how did a veteran of thirtysomething and The West Wing end up in a New Mexico courtroom?

The allegations trace back to The Cleaning Lady, the Fox drama Busfield directed between 2022 and 2024 while it filmed in Albuquerque. According to NBC News, the parents of twin boys who had worked on the show accused him of touching the children inappropriately. ABC News reported that police opened an investigation in November 2024 after a University of New Mexico Hospital physician examined one of the children and notified authorities. Warner Bros. attorneys told police that an earlier internal review had found no evidence supporting the claims.

A warrant was issued in January 2026, and Busfield turned himself in to Albuquerque authorities. In February, a Bernalillo County grand jury indicted him on four counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor, and he pleaded not guilty. DYR reported on that indictment at the time.

Busfield, 69, has denied every allegation from the start and has called them lies. NBC News reported that when he testified before the grand jury, he said, “I’m saying that is absolutely one gazillion percent untrue. Never ever.” His lawyers filed the motion to dismiss in June. They argued the prosecutor “abandoned his statutory duty of neutrality” and “foreclosed the grand jury’s own repeated requests to hear additional testimony.”

Through all of it, one person close to him kept her public comments rare and pointed.

Gilbert and Busfield married in 2013, each with a long career behind them. He won an Emmy in 1991 for playing Elliot Weston on thirtysomething. Movie fans also know him as Ray Kinsella’s skeptical brother-in-law, Mark, in Field of Dreams. She had been a household name since she was 9, when she first played Laura Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie in 1974. She stayed with the role until 1983. Along the way she earned an Emmy nomination for playing Helen Keller in the 1979 TV movie The Miracle Worker. Later she served as president of the Screen Actors Guild from 2001 to 2005.

When the charges surfaced, Gilbert deactivated her Instagram and Threads accounts. Months later she sat down with Good Morning America. According to Parade, she told George Stephanopoulos, “This has been the most traumatizing experience of our lives.” She was blunt about the cost. “For Tim, it’s done. He’s canceled…even if he’s exonerated, he will always be that guy.” Entertainment Weekly reported that she also said, “I know this man in my bones.”

DYR followed each step. We covered her first emotional response in April. Then in June came her goodbye to the Upper West Side apartment she had shared with Busfield for eight years. That came the same month his lawyers asked the court to throw out the indictment.

When Friday’s ruling arrived, she answered with a movie quote.

What Did Melissa Gilbert Post After The Ruling?

According to Entertainment Weekly, Gilbert shared an image on Instagram on Friday afternoon that read, “So shines a good deed in a weary world.” She also posted a link to the New York Times story about the dismissal to her Instagram Stories. Parade reported the same post and noted that she has not yet directly addressed the judge’s decision in her own words.

Anyone who saw Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in 1971 knows the line. Gene Wilder’s Wonka says it near the end, after Charlie Bucket quietly returns the Everlasting Gobstopper instead of selling out the candy maker who had just yelled at him. As EW pointed out, the line is one word away from Portia’s speech in Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, which ends “in a naughty world.”

Gilbert added no caption of her own, and the court record is still open while the district attorney weighs a new grand jury. For now, the actress who spent nine seasons on Walnut Grove let a 55-year-old movie line speak for her family.
