Karen Allen turns 75 on October 5, and she has never lived like a typical movie star. The woman who gave Indiana Jones a run for his money built her life in the Berkshires, far from any studio lot.
It has been 45 years since Raiders of the Lost Ark made her famous. As Karen Allen turns 75, she is still acting and still doing things her own way.
From ‘Animal House’ To Marion Ravenwood
Allen was born October 5, 1951, in Carrollton, Illinois. She made her film debut in Animal House in 1978. Three years later she played Marion Ravenwood, the bar owner who could hold her own beside Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones.
More favorites followed. She starred with Jeff Bridges in Starman in 1984 and with Bill Murray in Scrooged in 1988. A younger generation knows her as the mom in The Sandlot.
She returned as Marion in 2008 and again in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny in 2023.
How Karen Allen Turns 75 On Her Own Terms
Motherhood changed her priorities. Her son, Nicholas, was born in 1990, and she has never regretted the choices she made for him. “I feel that he is living proof that I made all the right decisions, because he is such a lovely person,” she told HuffPost, as quoted by Hello!. Nicholas grew up to be a chef and won an episode of Chopped.
In 2003 she founded Karen Allen Fiber Arts in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. The shop sells her own knitwear alongside work by other designers.
Her community honored her this year. The Berkshire International Film Festival marked its 20th season with a tribute to her career.
She explained her taste in roles to The Boston Globe. “I love fragile characters who are struggling with real issues,” she said.
There is more to come. Allen appears with Jessica Chastain in the horror film Other Mommy, which is due this fall. Marion Ravenwood would approve of a woman who keeps her own schedule.
