Linda Gray, 86, Reveals How Son’s Death Pushed Her To Leave Home Of 50 Years

by Ruth A

Published September 20, 2026

Linda Gray spent decades associated with the sprawling drama of Dallas, but one of the biggest changes in her real life came far away from the fictional Ewing ranch. The actress recently reflected on losing her son, Jeff Thrasher, and the decision that followed to leave the California property she had called home for half a century.

According to Remind, at 86, Gray described the loss as something a mother never truly gets over. Jeff, a documentarian, died in 2020 at age 56 after battling leukemia. Not long afterward, she began questioning whether remaining alone on three acres surrounded by memories still made sense.

Gray explained that the ranch carried countless reminders of Jeff, including memories of seeing him ride his bicycle around the property. Her daughter, Kehly Sloane, encouraged her to consider a move and suggested that a different environment might help her begin moving forward.

Eventually, Gray left the property and settled into a condo in Palm Springs. The decision did not erase her grief, and she made clear that losing a child remains an experience she cannot simply put behind her. She described Jeff as full of love, humor, and life and said memories of him still return whenever she sees a photograph or senses his presence.

For television audiences, Gray will always have a strong connection to Sue Ellen Ewing, the glamorous and complicated character she played on Dallas. The primetime soap ran for 14 seasons from 1978 to 1991 and became one of the defining dramas of its era, alongside stars including Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy, Barbara Bel Geddes, and Victoria Principal.

Gray’s latest reflections reveal a much more private chapter than anything audiences watched unfold at Southfork. After spending 50 years in one home, she chose change at a stage of life when staying put might have seemed easier. The move did not mean leaving her son behind; by her own account, those memories remain firmly with her. Instead, it offered Linda Gray a way to create space for a different kind of life while still carrying the people and places that shaped everything that came before.
