Nick Nolte Looks Worlds Away From His ’70s Heartthrob Days in Rare Venice Appearance

by Ruth A

Published September 12, 2026

At 85, Nick Nolte made a rare return to the spotlight at the Venice Film Festival, giving longtime fans a striking new glimpse of the actor they first knew as one of Hollywood’s rugged leading men. Nolte attended the Sept. 8 premiere of Company, his new film directed by Casey Affleck, marking his first red carpet appearance in four years.

According to Closer Weekly, with a full white beard and long gray hair, the actor looked very different from the blond heartthrob who broke out in the 1970s. That contrast feels especially nostalgic considering his rise through Rich Man, Poor Man and later films that made his weathered good looks and intense screen presence part of his Hollywood identity.

Nolte joined Affleck and several of his company costars at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. The film casts him as an aging hermit who rescues a stranded actress during a Colorado blizzard, setting off a story that moves across different timelines. It also marks another recent screen role for Nolte following Crime 101 earlier this year.

During a festival press conference, Nolte spoke about preparing for emotionally difficult material and described listening as an important part of his performance. Affleck praised the veteran actor’s ability to reach vulnerable places quickly, saying Nolte’s decades of experience showed in the quality of his work on set.

The Venice photos naturally invite comparisons with Nolte’s younger years. His 1976 role in Rich Man, Poor Man helped turn him into a major star, and he followed it with movies including The Deep, North Dallas Forty, and 48 Hrs. He remained a leading Hollywood presence into the 1990s with films such as The Prince of Tides and Cape Fear. PEOPLE later named him its Sexiest Man Alive in 1992.

Decades later, the face has changed, but the acting career continues. Nolte has largely stayed away from red carpets in recent years, which made his Venice appearance particularly noticeable. Rather than simply revisiting his past, he arrived with another movie to promote, reminding audiences that the former leading man is still adding roles to a career that began long before many of today’s stars entered Hollywood.
