Mariska Hargitay is heading into one of television’s biggest nights, the Emmys, with two new trophies already in hand. Days before hosting the Primetime Emmys on Sept. 14, the longtime Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star celebrated a major career milestone at the Creative Arts Emmys.

According to Hollywood Reporter, the Mariska Hargitay Emmys moment felt especially meaningful because the victories came from a deeply personal project. Hargitay won for directing a documentary or nonfiction program and for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special for My Mom Jayne: A Film By Mariska Hargitay, bringing her career Emmy total to three.

Hargitay described the recognition as something completely different from her first Emmy victory two decades ago. She won Outstanding Lead Actress for Law & Order: SVU in 2006, but her latest awards celebrate her work behind the camera. The actress said entering a new creative arena and receiving such recognition felt beyond anything she had imagined.

Those wins arrive during what Hargitay calls a year of saying yes. Along with directing My Mom Jayne, she has embraced opportunities including Broadway and hosting the Emmys. When producers first approached her about the hosting job, she initially thought they were joking. Instead of letting fear make the decision, she chose to take on another challenge and trust that she would figure it out.

For decades, Hargitay has been best known as Olivia Benson on Law & Order: SVU, a role that made her one of television’s most recognizable stars. Her documentary work has opened a new chapter, allowing her to tell a deeply personal story about her mother, Jayne Mansfield. Now, as she prepares to host the Emmys, Hargitay says she is embracing what she calls an exciting “third act.”

The timing makes the Mariska Hargitay Emmys story feel particularly full circle. She will walk onto the stage not only as one of television’s longest-running stars but also as a newly honored director and producer whose career continues to expand beyond the role audiences know best. After decades of success as Olivia Benson, Hargitay could easily have stayed in familiar territory. Instead, she has chosen new challenges, new creative roles, and a simple philosophy of saying yes. With three Emmys now to her name and her first hosting appearance ahead, this chapter may prove that some of the most surprising career moments can arrive well after the first breakthrough.
