Lucille Ball Didn’t Hold Back About Marriage To Desi Arnaz: ‘I Married A Loser’

by Ruth A

Published August 9, 2026

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz created one of television’s most beloved couples on I Love Lucy. Away from the cameras, however, their real-life marriage faced years of turmoil. Long after their divorce, Ball spoke surprisingly openly about what she believed went wrong between them.

According to People, during a 1977 interview with Barbara Walters, Ball described her former husband as a “loser.” Still, she did not dismiss his talent or the life they built together. Instead, her comments revealed the complicated feelings that remained nearly two decades after their marriage ended.

Ball and Arnaz married in 1940, years before I Love Lucy turned them into television icons. Together, they built Desilu Productions and welcomed two children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr. However, their relationship struggled behind the scenes. Ball first filed for divorce in 1944, although the couple reconciled. Their marriage ultimately ended for good in 1960.

Years later, Ball offered a striking explanation for their problems. While talking with Walters, she acknowledged that Arnaz was brilliant, sweet, and extremely generous. Yet, she believed he had a tendency to destroy what he had worked hard to create. When Walters mentioned Ball’s second husband, Gary Morton, Ball contrasted him with Arnaz and said she had “married a loser before.” Her remarks offered an unusually candid look at the Lucille Ball marriage to Arnaz.

Despite their difficult marriage, divorce did not completely separate Ball and Arnaz. Both eventually remarried. Ball married comedian Gary Morton in 1961, while Arnaz married Edith Mack Hirsch in 1963. Nevertheless, they remained connected through their children and the enormous television legacy they had created together.

Their daughter Lucie has since offered a softer picture of their relationship after the split. She told people that things between her parents improved once they separated. According to Lucie, they remained part of each other’s lives even though they could no longer make their marriage work. Their connection lasted until Arnaz died from lung cancer in December 1986. Ball died in April 1989 at age 77. Ultimately, the Lucille Ball marriage to Arnaz contained both extraordinary professional success and painful personal struggles. Yet their bond survived in a different form long after their divorce, adding another layer to one of classic television’s most fascinating partnerships.
