Star Trek alum William Shatner is opening up about one of the most difficult chapters of his life, revealing that he and his youngest daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, were both battling stage 4 cancer at the same time. The father and daughter shared their emotional story in a new interview, explaining how they leaned on one another through frightening diagnoses, grueling treatments, and months of uncertainty before ultimately becoming cancer-free.
Melanie, 61, was first diagnosed with HER2-positive stage 4 breast cancer in 2022 after discovering a lump despite having recently received a clear mammogram. The cancer had spread to nearby lymph nodes, leading to chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and radiation treatments. During one particularly difficult night, she recalled calling her father in tears because she believed she was dying. Within minutes, Shatner arrived at her home to comfort her, reassuring her that the ordeal would one day become just a memory.

As Melanie neared the end of her treatment, the family was hit with another devastating blow. In June 2023, Shatner learned he had stage 4 malignant melanoma that had spread to his lungs and brain. The Star Trek legend underwent surgery followed by two years of immunotherapy. Despite the seriousness of the diagnosis, Melanie said her father remained remarkably optimistic, insisting he would make it through.
The experience strengthened the already close bond between father and daughter. While Shatner had been there for Melanie during her darkest moments, she was equally determined to support him through his own battle. The family rallied around both of them as they navigated treatments together, finding comfort in each other’s resilience and refusing to let the diagnoses define their outlook on life.

By late 2024, both Shatner and Melanie had been declared cancer-free. They credit advances in modern cancer treatments, the expertise of their medical teams, and the unwavering support of family for helping them reach that milestone. Their shared experience also gave them a renewed appreciation for everyday life and the importance of cherishing time with loved ones.
Now, the pair hopes their story can encourage others facing similar battles. Shatner and Melanie are launching a new podcast, No Time but Now, where they’ll speak with doctors, cancer survivors, and other guests about resilience, health, and making the most of every day. For Shatner, the journey has reinforced a simple lesson: life is precious, and every moment is worth embracing.
