Fans of Little House on the Prairie have another reason to visit Walnut Grove thanks to the upcoming reboot. Alison Arngrim, the actress who made Nellie Oleson one of television’s most unforgettable troublemakers, has returned with a surprise cameo in Netflix’s new series, delighting longtime viewers of the beloved classic.

According to Fox News, her return is more than a nostalgic appearance. As young actress Willa Dunn introduces Nellie to a new generation, Alison Arngrim is sharing thoughtful advice on playing one of television’s most famously disliked characters—and why earning viewers’ hatred can actually mean you’ve done the job well.

The actress, now 64, said she has not yet met Willa Dunn, but she already has one important message for the young performer. She believes anyone taking on the role of Nellie must remember that viewers are reacting to the character, not the person playing her.

Arngrim explained that hearing fans say they can’t stand Nellie should be taken as a compliment rather than an insult. She compared the role to other iconic screen villains, noting that actors are simply bringing fictional characters to life. In her view, separating yourself from the role is essential, especially for a young actor stepping into such recognizable shoes.

The original Nellie still makes fans react to the ‘Little House’ reboot decades later

Arngrim embraced the challenge of playing television’s favorite bully from the very beginning. Growing up in an acting family, she understood that convincing audiences to dislike Nellie meant she was succeeding. Even today, she says fans still remind her of the mean tricks Nellie pulled on Laura Ingalls more than 50 years ago.

She even recalled someone throwing a cup of orange soda at her during a Christmas parade because audiences disliked Nellie so much. Rather than taking offense, she saw it as proof of how deeply viewers connected with the character. As the Little House reboot introduces the story to a new generation, Arngrim hopes the new Nellie embraces the role with confidence. While fans will naturally compare the new cast with the originals, Arngrim’s surprise appearance bridges the past and present. Her message is simple: if audiences love to hate Nellie again, the new actress has captured what made the character unforgettable.
