Barry Williams Fondly Calls Sid And Marty Krofft Spinoff “Ahead Of Its Time”

by Ruth A

Published April 17, 2026

For fans of The Brady Bunch, the original series remains a comforting snapshot of family life in the late 1960s and early ’70s. Its wholesome tone and memorable characters helped it endure long after its initial run, becoming a staple of nostalgic television.

However, not every chapter of the franchise received the same warm reception. The Brady Bunch spinoff that followed in the mid-1970s took a bold and unexpected turn, leaving audiences both confused and curious about its unusual direction.

Brady Bunch Spinoff Took a Wild Creative Turn

In 1976, The Brady Bunch Variety Hour brought the familiar cast back together, but with a completely different premise. Instead of their suburban setting, the Brady family became performers in a colorful variety show filled with musical numbers, comedy sketches, and celebrity appearances.

Barry Williams, who played Greg Brady, later described the project as chaotic and over-the-top. According to Parade, he initially viewed the show as a misstep, even calling it one of the worst programs in television history in his earlier reflections. At the same time, the production leaned heavily into the style of creators Sid and Marty Krofft, known for their imaginative and eccentric programming. That influence shaped the show’s tone, turning it into something far removed from the original series.

A Show Reconsidered Over Time

Years later, Williams offered a different perspective. Rather than dismissing the Brady Bunch spinoff entirely, he began to appreciate its unique qualities. He described it as a “circus,” but in a way that celebrated its creativity and boldness.

The show’s exaggerated costumes, vibrant colors, and unpredictable format now feel more in line with modern entertainment trends. What once seemed strange may have simply arrived before audiences were ready to embrace it. Although the series lasted only a short time, it remains a fascinating part of television history. It reflects an era when networks experimented freely, sometimes producing results that only gained appreciation years later.
