For years, Donny Osmond and his family provided holiday cheer to living rooms with Christmas specials. The holiday performances, which included music and entertainment, were a holiday tradition for many. As one of the main stars, Osmond helped to make those moments magical.
Now, he nostalgically looks back on those memories but not with any plans for a revival. In a new interview, he shared why he does not believe another Osmond family Christmas special would be possible today. While he appreciates the past, he believes the time for such shows has passed.
Why is Donny Osmond avoiding another Osmond family Christmas show?
Osmond asserts that the entertainment business has changed, and it is hard to recreate the magic of those classic holiday specials. Back then, networks had fewer channels, so a Christmas special was an event. With so many choices for viewers now, he thinks the format would not have the same impact.
Money is another consideration. It would require a lot more money to make a quality holiday special these days than it did in the past. Osmond also believes that people just don’t watch these kinds of shows anymore. Even when people have tried reviving the old Christmas variety show concept, it is never quite the same.
What is Donny Osmond doing today?
Although he’s retiring from Christmas specials, Osmond continues to perform. He’s currently headlining his own Las Vegas show at the Harrah’s Showroom. The performance pairs his biggest hits with new technology, even featuring a digital projection of his younger self from the ’70s. Though he’s glad to be performing, he realizes there will come a time when he’ll need to retire.

He’s always said that if he can’t give the fans his best, he’ll know it’s time to quit. However, for now, at least, he’s still got lots of energy and his fans couldn’t be more thrilled. One excited concertgoer shared, “Donny still has it! He puts on an amazing show every night!” Another added, “Seeing him perform live is a dream come true. He’s a legend!”
