As America mourns the loss of its former president, the farewell to Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, has begun in his home state of Georgia. Jimmy Carter, who died on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100, is being honored with a state funeral. The funeral procession began in Americus, Georgia, where Jimmy Carter’s life started.
The solemn tribute took place outside Carter’s family farm. It was on this farm he grew up and developed the values that shaped his life. As the nation remembers his legacy, his contributions to peace, human rights, and public service are being celebrated by citizens and world leaders alike.

His funeral procession began in Americus at the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, where the president’s current and former Secret Service agents put his body into a black hearse and walked alongside it as they went to Carter’s small town.
As they continued the procession, his flag-draped casket made its way through the town where Carter was born and spent most of his life; while that was going on, the National Park Service rang a bell 39 times in tribute to his place in American history as the 39th president.
The streets were lined with mourners, many of whom had known Carter for years. The motorcade also passed familiar landmarks, including the family peanut warehouse and the old train depot that served as the headquarters for his modest 1976 presidential campaign. The funeral ceremonies provided an opportunity for people around the world to reflect on and pay tribute to him.
Family and friends pay their respects
During the funeral procession, his family also paid their respects to him. His grandson Jason Carter, now chair of the Carter Center, spoke lovingly about his grandfather’s legacy at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta. “His spirit fills this place,” he said. In a heartfelt tribute, James “Chip” Carter, Carter’s son, also talked about how his parents worked together to change the world, both in their public service and their personal devotion to each other.
Chip also recalled intimate moments from their family life, shedding light on the father who took time to teach his son even during busy moments. The rest of the funeral procession is scheduled to continue on Tuesday, with a departure ceremony to honor Jimmy Carter. He will finally be laid to rest beside his wife of 77 years.
