Richard Simmons’ publicist, Tom Estey, gave an update on his aggrieved family’s choice to deal with the tragic news in private. Richard’s brother, Lenny Simmons, was also a big fan of his, reminiscing how helpful he was to everyone around him.
The Simmons family admitted to feeling overwhelmed and desperately in need of a break, which they have now gotten. They expressed their gratitude to fans and well-wishers of Richards’ and urged the media to stay out of their faces during this period.

According to Lenny, Richard has always been a kind, empathetic, and compassionate person, even when the cameras are not rolling. While chatting with PEOPLE following the announcement of her brother’s passing, Lenny asked that he be celebrated with joy, with the memories of him providing warmth amid the grief.

As is his character, Richard went straight into creating and providing fans with entertainment after coming out of his 10-year hiatus. His years away from the spotlight did not stop his interaction with fans, as he would reply to up to 100 emails a day, encouraging and keeping them as happy as could.
Richard lived a life he was grateful for before his passing
Ahead of his 76th birthday, Richard expressed gratitude to his fans, noting that he would spend his anniversary catering to their needs. He was actively working on a Broadway show about his life and career, having written up to 14 songs in preparation for production.
He planned to showcase life as a young boy in New Orleans, finding his way to stardom through fitness. Sadly, he was unable to actualize this dream but has left behind a rich catalog of Sweatin’ to the Oldies tapes, and multiple published books including the Farewell To Fat Cookbook and the Richard Simmons Never Say Diet Book.
