Here’s Why You Should Close Your Bedroom Door At Night

Ever wondered before going to bed if you should have your bedroom door open or closed at night? Do you sleep with your bedroom door open or closed? Studies have shown that more than half of people sleep with their bedroom door open. However, choosing the “right” way could mean life or death if you have a fire. So, which should you do?

You should always close your door when you go to bed. A closed bedroom door can slow the spread of flames, decrease temperatures, reduce smoke inhalation, and improve oxygen levels in the room. Unfortunately, house fires are pretty common and because we all have more synthetic furniture these days, fires spread extremely quickly.

Keep Your Bedroom Door Closed At Night

Just a few decades ago the average time it took to escape a home fire was about 17 minutes. Now it is three minutes or less. This is because of the synthetic furniture, more open floor plans in homes, and other flammable materials. Just closing your bedroom door at night can give you more time to get out the bedroom windows safely and call the fire department.

Remember, prevent home fires by making sure to blow out candles, turn off and unplug hot electronics and hair tools, remove dryer lint after each use, get your heating system checked regularly, make sure you have working smoke alarms, turn off the oven and stovetop, etc. Use common sense and have an escape plan in case there is a fire. Make sure everyone in your household knows about it too.

Keeping Your Bedroom Door Closed At Night Is Safer

The UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute (FSRI) launched a new public safety campaign called “Close Before You Doze” to help save lives. Many people sleep with the door open because of the lack of information and they believed it was the safer option. The campaign showed a demonstration on how a fire burns in a closed room versus an open one and urged people to close their door when they hit the hay.

Check out one of the campaign videos below! Make sure to shut your bedroom door at night, your kid’s bedroom door or anyone else’s in your household. Have any pets sleep in a bedroom with a person too. Small precautions could save your life and the lives of others in the event a fire takes place in your home.
