• 1900 – ‘His Master’s Voice’, was registered with the U.S. Patent Office. The logo of the Victor Recording Company, and later, RCA Victor, shows the dog, Nipper, looking into the horn of a gramophone machine.
• 1936 – Billie Holiday recorded “Billie’s Blues.”
• 1958 – The Everly Brothers recorded “Devoted To You”.

• 1961 – Bobby Lewis started a seven week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Tossin’ and Turnin’, the longest running No.1 single of 1961, spending seven weeks at the top of the chart.
• 1964 –  The Beatles released the album A Hard Day’s Night worldwide and the single “A Hard Day’s Night” in the U.K1964, 200,000 Liverpudlians took to the streets to celebrate The Beatles return to Liverpool for the northern premiere of the group’s first film ‘A Hard Day’s Night.’
• 1964 – “Do Wah Diddy Diddy” by Manfred Mann was released in the U.K.
• 1965 – The Four Tops racked up a sixth week at #1 on the R&B chart with “I Can’t Help Myself”.
• 1965 – Wilson Pickett’s “In The Midnight Hour” was released.
• 1965 – The Rolling Stones started a four week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’, the group’s first chart-topper there.
• 1966 – Johnny Tilotson, The Jive Five, The Tymes, The Shangra-Las and local band The Castiles (with Bruce Springsteen on vocals) all appeared at the Surf ‘n See Club in Seabright New Jersey.
• 1967 – The Monkees released the single “Pleasant Valley Sunday”.

• 1967 – Bobbie Gentry recorded “Ode to Billie Joe.”
• 1968 – Eric Clapton announced that Cream would break up following a farewell tour.
• 1969 – The funeral of Rolling Stone Brian Jones took place in his home town at Hatherley Road Parish Church, Cheltenham.
• 1971 – Carole King remained at #1 for the fourth straight week with “It’s Too Late”/”I Feel The Earth Move”
• 1971 – Three Dog Night’s “Liar” was released.

• 1972 – Harry Nilsson’s eighth album, Son of Schmilsson was released. It featured George Harrison under the name George Harrysong and Ringo Starr, listed as Richie Snare, on some of the tracks. Peter Frampton also played guitar on most of the album.
• 1972 – Chicago released the album Chicago V on Columbia Records.
• 1974 – David Bowie played the first of five dates at The Tower Theatre in Philadelphia the recordings of which made up the ‘David Live’ album released later that year.
• 1976 – One Hit Wonders Starland Vocal Band started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Afternoon Delight’, it was also their only hit in the UK making No.18 on the chart.

• 1976 – The Carpenters hit #1 on the Adult chart with “I Need To Be In Love”.
• 1978 – Rolling Stone Bill Wyman was knocked unconscious after falling from the stage during a Stones concert at the Coliseum, St Paul, Minnesota.
• 1980 – Bob Marley and the Wailers began what would be Marley’s last ever UK tour when they appeared in Dublin, Ireland.
• 1980 – During their 23 date ’11 O’Clock Tick Tock’ tour U2 appeared at The Clarendon Hotel in London.
• 1985 – The Prince song “Poplife” was released.
• 1989 – The Monkees were awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
• 1993 – SWV (Sisters With Voices) took over at #1 with “Weak

“TV/Radio”

• 1950 – The US music show Your Hit Parade premiered on NBC-TV. The program, which featured vocalists covering the top hits of the week, had been on radio since 1935. It moved to CBS in 1958 but was canceled the following year, unable to cope with the rising popularity of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

• 1966 – The Stones appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in a rerun of their February 13 performance.
• 1969 – The Temptations TV special aired on syndicated television.
• 1971 – Smokey Robinson and the Miracles performed “The Tears Of A Clown” on American Bandstand.

• 1975 – The “Gladys Knight & the Pips” summer series premiered on NBC-TV.

• 1910 – W.R. Brookins became the first to fly an airplane at an altitude of one mile.
• 1928 – George Eastman first demonstrated color motion pictures.
• 1938 – Howard Hughes completed a 91 hour flight around the world.
• 1943 – Arthur Ashe, the first African-American inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, was born. He had won 33 career titles.

• 1962 – The Telstar Communications satellite was launched. The satellite relayed TV and telephone signals between Europe and the U.S.
• 1969 – The funeral of Rolling Stone Brian Jones took place in his home town at Hatherley Road Parish Church, Cheltenham.
• 1969 – The National League was divided up into two baseball divisions.
• 1975 – Cher filed for divorce from Greg Allman, just ten days after the couple had married.

• 1985 – Coca-Cola resumed selling the old formula of Coke, it was renamed “Coca-Cola Classic.” It was also announced that they would continue to sell “New” Coke.

• 1993 – Bob Segar and Juanita Dorricott were married.
• 1997 – Chrissie Hynde (Pretenders) and Lucho Brieva were married.
• 1997 – Scientists in London said DNA from a Neanderthal skeleton supported a theory that all humanity descended from an “African Eve” 100,000 to 200,000 years ago.
