“Music”

• 1954 – Elvis Presley recorded ‘Blue Moon of Kentucky’, (the B-side for his first single) at Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee.
• 1955, Bill Haley & His Comets went to No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Rock Around the Clock’, staying at No.1 for eight weeks and becoming one of the biggest selling singles of all time.

• 1956 – After the June 30th trouble at Asbury Park, Bill Haley and His Comets were denied permission to play at the Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City. A city ordnance was passed that read: “Rock and roll music encouraged juvenile delinquency and inspired young females in lewd bathing suits to perform obscene dances on the city’s beaches.”
• 1957 –  Bobby Helms recorded “My Special Angel”.
• 1958 – Johnny Cash signed with Columbia Records, where he would remain for the next 30 years releasing over 60 albums.
• 1960 –  Chubby Checker released the single “The Twist” on Parkway Records.

• 1962 – Bob Dylan recorded ‘Blowin’ In the Wind’ at Columbia Recording Studios in New York City during an afternoon session.
• 1963 – Martha and the Vandellas released the single “Heat Wave” on Gordy Records.
• 1964 –  The Animals’ classic “The House Of The Rising Sun” fended off all challengers in attaining the #1 spot in the U.K.
• 1966 – The Temptations made it six weeks at #1 on the R&B chart with “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg”.

• 1967 – On a US tour supporting The Monkees, The Jimi Hendrix Experience appeared at the Convention Hall, Miami, Florida. After it became plainly apparent that the group is not suited to teenybopper audiences, the tour’s promoter Dick Clark and Hendrix’s manager Chas Chandler concoct a story saying that the conservative Daughters of the American Revolution group had complained at Jimi’s act and so the Experience left the tour after just six shows.
• 1971 – David Bowie started recording sessions at Trident Studios in London, for what would become the concept album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars.
• 1972 – Paul McCartney and Wings played their very first show in the small French town of Chateauvillon. The band included Denny Laine, Denny Seiwell, Henry McCullough and Paul’s wife, Linda. It was McCartney’s first time on the road sinceThe Beatles quit touring in 1966.
• 1974 – Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young started their reunion tour in Seattle.
• 1977 – Elvis Costello quit his day job at Elizabeth Arden Cosmetics to become a full time musician.
• 1977 –  Kenny Loggins released his first solo single “I Believe In Love” to radio stations.

• 1977 – The Emotions had already been at #1 for four weeks on the R&B chart with “Best Of My Love”.
• 1981 – The Jacksons began a 36 city tour
• 1983 – The Police started an eight week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Every Breath You Take’ also No.1 in the UK.
• 1983 – Wham! went to No.1 on the UK album chart with their debut release ‘Fantastic!’, which went on to spend 116 weeks on the chart.
• 1984 – The album “Ice Cream Castle” was released by The Time.
• 1988 –  “Paradise” by Sade was #1 on the R&B chart.

• 1988 – Cheap Trick went to No.1 on the US singles chart with The Flame, the group’s only US No.1.
• 1988 – Glenn Medeiros was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love For You’. The 18 year old from Hawaii was one of the youngest males to reach the top of the charts.

• 1995 – The Grateful Dead gave their last concert with Jerry Garcia at Chicago’s Soldier Field. Garcia died the next month of a heart attack.
• 1996 – Prince released the album “Chaos and Disorder.”
• 1998 – Janet Jackson set a gross revenue record of $875,000 at the MCI Center in Washington, DC. The previous record was set my Yanni on January 31, 1998, with $860,300.
• 1999 – The state of Indiana renamed a 25-mile stretch of Interstate Route 65 as “Kenneth Babyface Edmonds Highway.” The same day Babyface donated $50,000 to establish VH1’s Save The Music campaign in the state

“TV/Radio”

• • 1956 – Dick Clark made his debut as host of “Bandstand” on a Philadelphia TV station. The name of the show was changed to “American Bandstand” when it went to ABC-TV.

• 1969 – Gladys Knight & the Pips performed on The Tonight Show.
• 1985 – Joe Namath, signed a five-year pact with ABC-TV to provide commentary for “Monday Night Football”.
• 1993 – NBC aired “A Different World” for the last time.

• 1998 – MTV Networks Europe announced in London the launch of freeform music channel M2 Europe. It was the first TV station to be launched on the internet.
• 2002 – ABC aired a rare interview with David Letterman on the premiere of “Up Close.”

• 1872 – The doughnut cutter was patented by John F. Blondel.
