Three Dog Night Nearly Passed On The Song That Became A No. 1 Smash

by Ruth A

Published October 8, 2026

Three Dog Night scored one of the biggest songs of its career with “Mama Told Me (Not to Come),” but getting the band to record it was anything but easy. Before the Randy Newman-penned track climbed to No. 1 in 1970, most of the group reportedly wanted nothing to do with it.

According to Parade, the story behind Three Dog Night Mama Told Me is a reminder that even future classics can be difficult to recognize at first. While the song eventually became the band’s first Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper, singer Cory Wells had to keep pushing his bandmates for years before they finally agreed to give it a chance.

Wells had already been performing “Mama Told Me (Not to Come)” before Three Dog Night recorded it. He discovered the song through one of Randy Newman’s albums and quickly became convinced that it had the potential to become a hit. His fellow band members, however, were far less enthusiastic.

Wells later recalled bringing the song to the group repeatedly, only to hear that they did not believe it had what they were looking for. According to him, it took three albums before they finally agreed to work on it. Danny Hutton later remembered feeling similarly unimpressed at first, admitting that the group remained lukewarm until rehearsals and recording began to transform the song.

A Rejected Song Became a Career-Defining Classic

Three Dog Night: LegacyTributes/X

Once Three Dog Night began arranging and recording the track, opinions started to change. The group added its own musical touches, building around the distinctive piano, rock-and-blues groove, and quirky lyrics about a young man encountering a party scene that proves far more overwhelming than expected. By the time the recording was finished, Hutton said the group realized they had created something special. That instinct proved correct. “Mama Told Me (Not to Come)” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of Three Dog Night’s defining recordings.

Newman had reportedly been skeptical of Three Dog Night before hearing their version but later expressed gratitude for its success. The Three Dog Night Mama Told Me story also reflects Cory Wells’ persistence. He championed the song when his bandmates were unsure and helped turn it into a chart-topping hit that remains closely tied to the group’s legacy.
