Only One Original Bee Gees Member Remains After Decades Of Heartbreaking Losses

by Ruth A

Published August 14, 2026

For decades, the Bee Gees created some of the most recognizable songs in pop and disco history. Brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb built a musical legacy that stretched across generations, but today, Barry stands as the only surviving member of the original sibling trio.

According to American Songwriter, the group has endured several heartbreaking losses over the years. Maurice died in 2003, followed by Robin in 2012. More recently, two musicians who played important roles in the band’s history, drummers Dennis Bryon and Colin Petersen, died just four days apart, adding another sad chapter to the Bee Gees story.

The Gibb brothers formed their group in the late 1950s and eventually became one of the world’s most successful musical acts. Their catalog includes classics such as “How Deep Is Your Love,” “Stayin’ Alive,” and “Night Fever.” Their success helped define the sound of the disco era, although their career stretched far beyond it. The group reportedly sold more than 120 million records worldwide and entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.

Tragedy gradually changed the family and the group. Maurice Gibb died in 2003 at age 53 after suffering complications from a twisted intestine. Robin Gibb died in 2012 at 62 following health problems that included cancer. Their younger brother Andy Gibb, who built a successful solo career rather than becoming an official member of the group, had died years earlier in 1988 at only 30. Barry, now 79, remains the only surviving Gibb brother.

Two Former Drummers Died Just Days Apart

The losses extend beyond the famous siblings. Drummer Dennis Bryon died at 76 on November 14, 2024, followed four days later by former drummer Colin Petersen at 78. Petersen helped shape the group’s early sound with his “less is more” approach, while Bryon contributed to its hugely successful disco era.

Those who knew Petersen remembered him warmly after his death. Best of the Bee Gees, a tribute group with which Petersen had performed, shared an emotional message celebrating his friendship, kindness, and lasting presence in their lives. Through all these losses, Barry continues to carry the music he created alongside his brothers. The songs have survived long after the era that produced them, finding new listeners while bringing older fans back to memories of the group’s remarkable run. With Barry now the only original Bee Gees member still alive, that music has also become a lasting reminder of the brothers and musicians who helped create it.
