During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Andrews addressed whether she would return as Queen Clarisse for the highly anticipated third installment of The Princess Diaries. She indicated that a return probably would not happen because she feels ready to leave that chapter of her career behind. She stressed that she has not completely retired, but the kind of work she enjoys doing has changed.

The team behind the upcoming sequel previously approached Andrews about returning. She found it difficult to turn down the opportunity because she had such an enjoyable experience with the franchise. However, Andrews ultimately felt the new movie could thrive without Queen Clarisse. She remains enthusiastic about seeing where the filmmakers and Anne Hathaway take the story next.

Andrews first portrayed Queen Clarisse Renaldi in 2001’s The Princess Diaries, playing the sophisticated grandmother of Hathaway’s Mia Thermopolis. Their unlikely grandmother-granddaughter relationship became a memorable part of the movie. Clarisse helped Mia navigate her unexpected royal responsibilities while the two gradually developed a much closer bond. Andrews returned for the 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

Disney announced the third film in 2022, with Hathaway returning as Mia and Adele Lim directing. Hathaway said the team found a promising new direction after rethinking the script, while her pregnancy has affected the project’s timing. For longtime fans, imagining another trip to Genovia without Queen Clarisse may feel emotional. Still, stepping away from film does little to diminish the remarkable legacy Julie Andrews has built. From Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music to The Princess Diaries, her performances have entertained multiple generations. Her acting career may have grown quieter, but the characters she created remain firmly woven into Hollywood history.
