by Ruth A

Published July 29, 2026

Patty Duke left an unforgettable mark on Hollywood through her award-winning performances and decades of work in film and television. Best remembered for winning an Academy Award for The Miracle Worker and starring in The Patty Duke Show, the actress built a legacy that continues to inspire audiences years after her passing in 2016.

According to Hello! today, much of that legacy lives on through the Patty Duke children. While each has taken a different path, two followed their parents into acting and built successful careers of their own. One son, in particular, became a household name after starring in one of the biggest movie franchises in cinema history.

The eldest of the Patty Duke children is actor Sean Astin. Although he was born during Duke’s brief marriage to Michael Tell, he was raised and later adopted by her third husband, actor John Astin, who famously played Gomez Addams in The Addams Family. Sean made his acting debut alongside his mother in the television film Please Don’t Hit Me, Mom, before earning acclaim in The Goonies.

Sean’s career reached even greater heights when he portrayed Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He later appeared in films such as 50 First Dates and the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. Beyond acting, Sean has continued his mother’s advocacy for mental health by supporting initiatives that encourage awareness and education. Patty’s second son, Mackenzie Astin, also built a successful acting career with roles in The Facts of Life, Iron Will, Scandal, The Magicians, and several other television productions.

The youngest of the Patty Duke children is Kevin Pearce, whom Duke adopted after marrying Michael Pearce. Unlike his older brothers, Kevin has largely stayed out of the spotlight and has chosen to live a more private life. While little is publicly known about him, he occasionally appeared with his mother at special events and remained an important part of her close-knit family.

Duke’s children have each preserved her legacy in different ways. Sean has often spoken warmly about his mother’s encouragement during his early acting career and has continued her work in mental health advocacy. Mackenzie has reflected on the lessons he learned from watching his parents navigate fame while protecting their children’s childhoods. Together, the Patty Duke children continue to celebrate the life of a beloved actress whose influence extends far beyond her remarkable achievements on screen.
