There is only one original member of the Village People group still alive today

Few music groups are as instantly recognizable as The Village People. Their colorful characters, unforgettable costumes, and disco anthems like Y.M.C.A. and Macho Man turned them into pop culture icons whose songs still fill dance floors decades later.

According to Remind, but time has changed the legendary lineup. After the recent death of lead singer Victor Willis’ longtime bandmate and fellow original member Felipe Rose, many fans have been surprised to learn that only one founding member of the group is still alive, marking the end of an important era in disco history.

The Village People burst onto the music scene in 1977 with a lineup of performers whose distinctive personas became just as famous as their songs. While the group’s membership changed several times over the years, Victor Willis remained the voice behind many of its biggest hits and helped co-write classics that continue to entertain audiences around the world.

Although Willis stepped away from the group at different points during the 1980s, he eventually returned and continued performing. Over the years, he also overcame personal struggles, including a battle with drug addiction, and later spoke openly about rebuilding his life. His career has stretched far beyond the disco era, making him the last living link to the original lineup that introduced the band to the world.

The original members each brought a memorable character to the stage, from the cowboy and construction worker to the police officer, sailor, biker, and Native American performer. Their unique look helped transform the group into a global phenomenon, while their upbeat music became a permanent part of weddings, sporting events, parties, and celebrations across generations.

Today’s touring lineup features newer performers who continue to keep the music alive, but the passing of the original members serves as a reminder of just how much time has passed since disco’s golden age.

Even so, the group’s influence remains undeniable. Their biggest songs are still instantly recognizable, introducing younger listeners to music that first became famous nearly 50 years ago. For longtime fans, knowing that Victor Willis is now the sole surviving original member adds a bittersweet note to an extraordinary legacy. While the faces on stage may have changed, the spirit of The Village People continues to endure through timeless music that has brought people together for generations.
