Barbara Eden Never Believed She Was Right For The Role That Made Her A Television Icon

by Ruth A

It is difficult to imagine classic television without Barbara Eden’s unforgettable performance in I Dream of Jeannie. Her playful charm, signature blink, and colorful costume helped transform the fantasy sitcom into one of the most beloved shows of the 1960s and introduced audiences to one of TV’s most memorable characters.

According to Parade, even long before she became a household name, Eden felt certain she would never land the part. In her mind, producers wanted someone who looked completely different, so she assumed they would never consider her for the role that later defined her career.

The actress later revealed that she never even auditioned for the role. At the time, she knew the production was considering tall brunettes and beauty pageant winners who matched the image she believed the creators wanted for the character. Because of that, she quickly dismissed the possibility that producers would ever choose her for the role.

Eden felt stunned when her agent told her that series creator Sidney Sheldon had already chosen her for the role. She famously responded by asking whether the producers actually knew what she looked like. As a short blonde actress, she believed she looked nothing like the image producers originally envisioned for Jeannie, which made the casting decision even more surprising and convinced her she would never land the role.

A Personal Surprise Nearly Changed Television History

Not long after accepting the role, Eden received another major surprise when she learned she was expecting a child with her husband at the time, actor Michael Ansara. She immediately assumed the pregnancy meant she would have to leave the series before it even began and contacted Sheldon so the production could find a replacement actress for Jeannie.

Instead, the producers decided to keep her in the starring role and worked creatively to hide her pregnancy on screen using loose costumes, carefully placed props, and strategic camera angles. Their decision proved to be a wise one. The sitcom ran for five successful seasons, earned Eden multiple Golden Globe nominations, and secured its place in television history. More than fifty years later, fans still associate the actress with the magical character of Jeannie that she once believed she was completely wrong to play, proving that sometimes the most unexpected casting choices become the most unforgettable.
