Barbara Eden Says A Difficult Moment Led To One Of Her Favorite ‘Jeannie’ Episodes

by Ruth A

Published June 3, 2026

Barbara Eden still looks back on I Dream of Jeannie with warmth, even when discussing one of the show’s most debated moments. The actress recently revisited the famous wedding episode, which many fans believe changed the direction of the series forever.

According to PEOPLE, Barbara Eden shared that the pilot remains her favorite episode of the classic sitcom, but the wedding episode holds second place in her heart. While she once disagreed with Jeannie and Tony getting married, she now chooses to remember the bright side of that difficult creative decision.

The wedding episode aired on December 3, 1969, during the show’s later years on NBC. In the story, Jeannie married Major Tony Nelson, played by Larry Hagman. For some viewers, that moment removed much of the playful romantic tension that had powered the series since its beginning.

Eden has admitted that she did not agree with the idea at the time. She believed a genie, described as a wisp of smoke, could not simply marry a mortal man without changing the heart of the show. Still, the network moved forward with the storyline, and Jeannie and Tony became spouses onscreen.

She Still Found Joy In The Difficult Moment

Although she questioned the plot, Eden later focused on what she enjoyed about the episode. She especially remembered the wedding costume designed by Joie Hutchinson, calling it one of the highlights. She also had fun playing the robot-like version of Jeannie, whom Dr. Bellows escorted down the aisle. The episode also returned to one of the show’s familiar magical rules: Jeannie could not be photographed. That detail helped keep some of the original fantasy spirit alive, even as the marriage changed the series. For Eden, the costume, comedy, and unusual twist gave her something positive to remember from a decision she once found frustrating.

I Dream of Jeannie premiered on NBC on September 18, 1965, introducing viewers to Captain Anthony Nelson and the 2,000-year-old genie who changed his life. The series ran for five seasons, but its popularity has endured for decades. More than 55 years later, Jeannie remains one of television’s most recognizable characters, and Barbara Eden continues to celebrate the role with gratitude and affection.
