Jason Ritter Says He Remains Close To His Father’s ‘8 Simple Rules’ Cast

by Ruth A

Published June 3, 2026

Jason Ritter still feels a deep connection to the cast of 8 Simple Rules, many years after the sitcom ended. The bond carries special meaning because the show was tied so closely to his father, John Ritter, who starred as Paul Hennessy before his sudden death in 2003.

According to Us Weekly, Jason Ritter said he still sees John’s former costars “all the time” and described them as supportive of his stepmother Amy Yasbeck’s foundation, The John Ritter Foundation for Aortic Health. His comments offered a touching look at how grief, memory, and shared love kept the cast connected long after the cameras stopped rolling.

John Ritter was rehearsing on the set of 8 Simple Rules in 2003 when he began feeling symptoms that seemed like a heart attack. Doctors later diagnosed him with an aortic dissection. He went into surgery but died hours later at age 54. The loss stunned his family, costars, and fans who had loved him for decades.

Jason said the experience created a lasting connection with Kaley Cuoco, Amy Davidson, and Martin Spanjers, who played John’s onscreen children. He explained that, in a strange way, it felt like they had all lost the same dad at the same time. John had been a warm presence on set, and his affection for the younger cast members helped make that loss feel deeply personal.

After John’s death, 8 Simple Rules paused production before returning with an emotional episode that addressed his character’s passing. The show continued for a time, with Katey Sagal’s Cate Hennessy and the children adjusting to life without Paul. ABC later canceled the series in 2005 after three seasons.

Even now, the relationships remain meaningful. Jason has not discussed a reunion with the cast, though he admitted that, as a fan, he would love to see one. He also wondered whether such a moment might feel too sad or strange. Still, he smiled at the idea of Cuoco, Davidson, Spanjers, and Sagal appearing on his current series, Matlock. For longtime viewers, his reflections show that the legacy of 8 Simple Rules goes far beyond the sitcom itself. It remains tied to John Ritter’s warmth, the cast’s shared grief, and the family feeling they never fully lost.
